It is Italy in 1992, overrun with corruption and scandals. Despite all the problems, a number of people are still trying to make the best of it. An ex-soldier accidentally stumbles into politics and has to pull out all the stops to even understand what they are talking about in the Senato della Repubblica; a woman-devouring marketer with a much too large cell phone - including antenna - hangs out with the Italian Don Draper; a hungry young cop tries to bring a personal crusade to a successful conclusion in addition to the fight against corruption; a classic Italian beauty ricochets everything that is loose and stuck with the aim of ever being able to announce something on Rai Uno and a daughter inherits her father's empire, but that turns out to be not the nicest gift that he gives her post mortem could print. At first they fool around a bit separately from each other, after a while the stories of the different characters start to become more and more entwined and a story unfolds that you cannot get enough of. Not me anyway. Anyone who has seen Gomorra knows that you can leave the creation of a nice oppressive Italian atmosphere to Sky Atlantic. 1992 is a visual orgasm. An ode to all that was beautiful and ugly about the '90's. The only thing missing at home on the couch is the feeling of that scorching Roman sun on your neck and the smell of roasted coffee beans and thin guys surrounded by a cloud of Valentino Uomo with too tight pants and plucked eyebrows in your nose. It is such a series that can actually only be made in Europe. Corbijn would probably mumble something here about the unique position of the sun and how it reflects so beautifully on the marble of Rome's most beautiful monuments. Whatever, Anton. Blast and screeching tire chase fetishists will shrug for 1992. To slow. Way too slow. For me it was mainly a slow sink in a slightly too hot bath and let yourself be intoxicated by the rising eucalyptus vapors. By the end of the season I was completely in it and saw to my full satisfaction that there were enough loose ends left to continue in a second season. Maybe they can extend it to '95, so that I can watch ten episodes, purring with happiness, at crying Italians, who sniffle in the lap of their mother trying to give a place to the lost Champions League final against Ajax. How nice would that be? It would make 1992 the most amazing series ever, but they probably don't think it's a good idea.
