All American: Homecoming canceled by The CW

It's official: The CW is not going ahead with a fourth season of All American: Homecoming.

The cast was informed of the decision yesterday. With Walker also canceled and Superman & Lois ending with its upcoming fourth season, All American (2018) is the only remaining scripted series from the pre-Nexstar CW.

All American: Homecoming

All American (2018) and All American: Homecoming executive producer/showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll had a strong reaction to the decision.

“I’m devastated to learn that All American: Homecoming will not be moving forward with more episodes and that this new season premiering in July will be our final one,” she said. “However, I am so very grateful to have worked with this incredible cast and crew, led by Geffri Maya, to bring the authentic HBCU experience to your screens for the last three seasons. We made this show for the culture and thank our loyal audience and fans for taking this ride with us.

We made this show so that our community, our kids (and their dreams), could be seen and celebrated every week and we are proud to say we accomplished that mission… Especially with this exciting final season which we can’t wait to show you all. So with a heavy but proud heart, I give one final shoutout to our favorite Bringston Lions!”

All American: Homecoming was on shaky ground. While the series' licensing fees were significantly reduced last year to $500,000-$750,000 per episode, The CW has slashed rates even further this year. Homecoming is popular among young viewers but attracts fewer viewers, something The CW is focusing more on as it looks to broaden its appeal beyond young adults.

Additionally, All American (2018) has an ongoing deal with Netflix, which would cover the recently picked up seventh season. Producer Warner Bros. TV struck a separate deal for the existing seasons (1-3) of Homecoming, which would not cover a potential fourth season, sources said, making the economics of the series even more challenging.

Another sign that The CW does not have much confidence in the spin-off of All American (2018) is that for the first time this year, Homecoming will not air during the regular broadcast season, but in the summer. The third season starts after the extensive sixth season of All American (2018).

“We want to thank the cast, crew, producers, NK, Marqui and everybody at Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television for their hard work and dedication in telling these important stories for three incredible seasons,” the network said in a statement. The upcoming final season is the best yet and we cannot wait to share it with fans beginning on Monday, July 8.”

All American: Homecoming is set against the backdrop of the HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) experience at Bringston University, where Black Excellence is a way of life. The series follows Simone (Geffri Maya from All American (2018)), a young tennis prospect from Beverly Hills, and her close circle of chosen family as they navigate the highs, lows and sexuality of early adulthood unsupervised at the prestigious HBCU.

All American: Homecoming is produced by Warner Bros. Television and CBS Studios in association with Berlanti Productions and Rock My Soul Productions, with executive producers Nkechi Okoro Carroll, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Robbie Rogers, Marqui Jackson and Lindsay Dunn.
