American Horror Story - Season 12 (first part)

The most famous horror anthology of recent years is back for a twelfth season. American Horror Story always manages to divide opinions well. Is that the case again this time?

There is no series in the world of series that manages to divide as much as American Horror Story. It's also not that difficult if every season tells a new story. One person likes one thing and another the other. Some people think everything is good and others nothing at all. I have watched every season of this anthology faithfully and I generally enjoy it.

The quality of the first three seasons has only been matched a few times since then. Sure, some seasons weren't fantastically good, but that didn't make them any less entertaining. However, the previous, eleventh season was really a tough job to wade through, which made even me, as a loyal viewer, start to fast-forward the episodes. The twelfth season is certainly better than that (although a bit boring)!

The twelfth season of American Horror Story, subtitled "Delicate," tells the story of rising actress Anna Victoria Alcott (played by AHS veteran Emma Roberts). She is busy campaigning for an Oscar, but at the same time she also wants a child and decides to try to get pregnant. That works, but soon all kinds of strange things happen to her. It soon turns out that there is more going on.

It's not bad at all, there are worse shows and even worse AHS seasons. It's just a bit boring.

The plot of this season is a bit thin and not very original. Some demons, some hallucinations, some blood. We know it. That feeling lingers a bit through the first five episodes. So little happens and what happens is unclear, meaningless and not very exciting. It's certainly not bad, there are worse series and even worse AHS seasons. It's just a bit boring.

The absence of familiar faces like Evan Peters and Sarah Paulson doesn't make things better either. It also doesn't help that the second part of the season is taking so long to arrive due to the strike. A not-very-exciting first part will probably leave many viewers hanging.

The acting meets the expectations you would have from American Horror Story. Nice and campy, nice and over the top. This season we see a number of regular faces from previous seasons, such as; Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, Leslie Grossman and Denis O'Hare.

However, there are also a few new faces in Ryan Murphy's horror universe. These include Matt Czuchry (The Resident), Cara Delevingne (Only Murders in the Building), Michaela JaƩ Rodriguez (Pose), Annabelle Dexter-Jones (Succession) and Kim Kardashian (The Kardashians).

I would like to briefly discuss Kim Kardashian's acting. As expected, there was a lot of criticism of her casting in advance. She's doing great though! Is she a great actress? No. Is she a bad actress? Certainly not. It is a level of acting that suits this series very well. A bit of camp is also allowed in American Horror Story.

As a summary: are you a fan of American Horror Story and do you like the style of this series? Then you should watch Delicate. Have you never seen anything before and are you looking for something new? Then watch the earlier seasons. If you become a fan you can appreciate this, but otherwise you won't.

An excellent 6.5 from me as a loyal viewer. If you're not, and this is the first thing you see of AHS, you'll probably give it a lower rating.
