Anne Rice's Mayfair Witches - First Episode

After the success of Interview with the Vampire, the second AMC series in Anne Rice's Immortal Universe started airing several weeks ago: Anne Rice's Mayfair Witches.
A couple of weeks ago, the first installment of Anne Rice's Mayfair Witches, based on the hugely popular book series Lives of Mayfair Witches (by Anne Rice, of course) was released. Mayfair Witches is the second series in AMC's Immortal Universe, along with Interview with the Vampire. This series appeared in 2022.

Mayfair Witches tells the story of Rowan Fielding, a talented neurosurgeon. In the first episode, we learn that Rowan has unexplainable powers that she can't always control. At the same time, the episode introduces the larger plot; Rowan is descended from the mysterious Mayfair family. We will probably learn more about this family and Rowan's powers during the remainder of this season.

Rowan Fielding is played by Alexandra Daddario. We know Daddario from The White Lotus (for which she received an Emmy nomination), Why Women Kill and American Horror Story. Daddario is a talented actress, but she doesn't quite convince this first episode. Perhaps this is also due to the somewhat meager material she has to work with. Other roles are played by, among others, Jack Huston (Fargo, Mr. Mercedes), Harry Hamlin (Mad Men, Shameless (US)), Tongayi Chirisa (Another Life) and Annabeth Gish (Pretty Little Liars, The Haunting, Midnight Mass).

The first episode is packed with story on the one hand, but is also very thin on the other. A lot happens, but I don't think they are major plot points in the story. All that happens is just to have it told so we can move on to what really matters. The first episode feels a bit like a must, a stepping stone to the rest. That's not necessarily bad, but makes it a bit boring.

The first episode feels a bit like a must, a stepping stone to the rest.

However, the preview at the end of the episode promises that there is much more to come this season. I am therefore curious how the season will develop. The first episode was a bit boring. I also have certain expectations, since Interview with the Vampire (a kind of sister series after all) received good reviews. Hopefully Mayfair Witches can develop itself in the same way.

For now a 6.5. But I think this can eventually go up once the entire season has been released.

Thanks for this review! I don't have an AMC+ account so I can't watch this show yet, but I'm very curious about it!

I have now seen the first episode, but contrary to your opinion, I did not find it boring, but I also have no expectations at all because I have not seen or read anything else about the Interview with the Vampire series. I am also very curious to see how the story will develop further and what I will think of it will be revealed in the coming episode(s). Thank you for your review.
