Raised by a gang leader after the death of their parents, two sisters from Zaun loot a Pilthoven villa, while two inventors try to contain the power of Hextech. The story takes place in Zaun and Pilthoven, two separate towns, closely connected but on the verge of war with each other. The first is dark, shabby and full of gangs. The second is prosperous, developed and equipped with the latest technologies. Shimmer, a drug that gives the user supernatural powers, is being developed in Zaun. In Pilthoven people rely on Hextech, a magical source of power.
The animated series has a unique style that is a combination of steampunk and arcanepunk. The 19th-century industrial age along with magic and science creates the perfect atmosphere. I thought it was beautifully drawn. The 2D and 3D effects, together with the different perspectives, ensure that you are completely immersed in the story. I also thought the music was very well made; it suited the scenes well.
The characters were well put together. I was particularly impressed by the character Jinx. Her unpredictable reactions, mental instability and her aggression made her an interesting character. Her doubts and emotions are perfectly depicted with the help of scratched animations, shocking images and flashing transitions of drawings over her image, when she hears other voices, for example.
Her sister Vi was also a very nice character in the series. I found the relationship with her sister interestingly portrayed. Vi goes in search of her sister, helped by a peacekeeper from Pilthoven, Caitlyn, because Jinx has stolen a Hextech part.
The stolen Hextech provides the necessary measures toward Zaun. But tension is also running high on the board of directors in Pilthoven. I thought it was well done that you also got to see this side. So not only what happens in Zaun, but also what effect everything has on Pilthoven.
I felt there was enough suspense and action in every episode. I was not bored for a moment and was completely immersed in the series after the first episode. In the beginning, I sometimes had trouble following the story, because it was a bit unclear to me what it was all about and where it would go. I think it's a good series and can't wait for season two. I, therefore, give it an 8.5.
