Arrow - Season 6

I am the Green Arrow – Oliver

Arrow, also known as the cornerstone of the DC universe on the CW channel. Countless spin-offs have come out after the success of this show. In the meanwhile, we've already arrived at the ending of the sixth season of this show. For the real Arrow follower seasons one and two were the best, three was okay, four was horrible and during the fifth season it appeared as if things were finally getting better once again. So, how about the sixth season?

Briefly put? The sixth season is quite similar to the third. In the beginning it appeared as if we were getting another bad season, but as it progressed it started to get better. The six final episodes of this season have managed to save the entire season.

Mild spoilers for the first couple of episodes of the sixth season!

The show fails, by not doing anything with the (amazing) cliffhanger from the previous season. Not a single important character has died due to the events that unfold on Lian Yu. The writers try to make it too easy for themselves, or at least I think so.

Of course, the fact that Manu Bennet has the chance to once again star as Deathstroke for several episodes turns my frown upside down, but it doesn't make up for the fact that 'deaths' have a lot less impact. Apparently the chances of surviving an entire exploding island are 100% certain.

End of spoiler warning

Next to that we get to meet Black Siren (Katie Cassidy), the evil doppelgänger from another earth (she was briefly introduced in the previous season of The Flash). Although I thought that Katie's acting was just fine, it was clear that the writers weren't sure what to do with her. Evil? Maybe she's a good person. Evil again? No wait, good again. This was unclear and it caused her to become less credible when she tried to redeem herself.

Although during a large portion of the season Cayden James (Michael Emerson) appeared to be the big bad, I don't want to talk about him too much. I thought his character was bland and didn't have a whole lot of story to it. At some point Ricardo Diaz (Kirk Acevedo) takes over and the quality of this season drastically improves.

Kirk portrays the calculating and fearsome Diaz masterfully. You can see his character grow, especially in the episode 'The Dragon'. Diaz is a worthy opponent, who could easily take his place alongside Deathstroke and Prometheus!

Speaking about actors, we also have Stephen Amell who portrays the titular Green Arrow. He never disappoints. No matter what the writers think of, he will always bring his best acting to the scene and successfully so. For an actor in a CW show, he is way above the standard.

The show has, especially in the middle of the season, difficulty to make sure all characters remain in the spotlight. Especially the latest members of team Arrow are affected by this. However, if the creators manage to keep the streamlined storyline of the last episodes going, I think that won't be an issue during the seventh season.

In the meanwhile, this show has been renewed for a seventh season, so we can at least follow our green hero for another year. There are some rumours that the seventh season may be the last, but for now those are just rumours. Season six was at least a step in the right direction, so I can't wait for season 7.

A 7.5!
