Peacock cancels Based on a True Story and Mr. Throwback

Peacock has canceled two comedy series: Based on a True Story and Mr. Throwback.
Based on a True Story by Craig Rosenberg and Jason Bateman ran for two seasons and starred Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina. The series is a satire of the true crime genre with elements loosely inspired by true events.

Based on a True Story

The first season follows Ava (Cuoco) and her husband Nathan (Messina), a down-on-her-luck couple whose lives collide with a notorious serial killer terrorizing Los Angeles. They seize a unique opportunity to capitalize on America’s obsession with true crime by creating a podcast with the killer.

Season two focused on new parents Ava and Nathan Bartlett, three months into parenthood. Ava is focused on caring for her family and is determined to fight her obsession with true crime and return to work as a real estate agent, while Nathan coaches private tennis clients.

Rosenberg was creator, writer, showrunner and executive producer of the first season. He was succeeded by Annie Weisman as showrunner of the series in season two, while Rosenberg focused on other projects but continued to executive produce.

Mr. Throwback

The Mr. Throwback memoir, from Happy Endings creator David Caspe and writing duo Matthew Libman and Daniel Libman, centers on Danny Grossman (Adam Pally), a struggling memorabilia dealer who seeks redemption by reuniting with his sixth-grade teammate, NBA legend Steph Curry.

Ego Nwodim, Ayden Mayeri, Tracy Letts, Layla Scalisi, Tien Tran and Rich Sommer also starred in the one-season series.
