MGM+ has renewed the western drama series Billy the Kid for a third season. Tom Blyth, who plays the title role, returns for the eight-part final season. Billy The Kid, the real outlaw, died at the age of 21 after killing about two dozen people. The series, created by The Tudors and Vikings creator Michael Hirst, premiered in April 2022 on what was then known as Epix, with its second season launching in October 2023 on the rebranded MGM+.
MGM+ said the series' second season "ranked among the platform's top three most-watched original series" in the network's history. Other MGM+ original series include From, Godfather of Harlem and the recently launched Emperor of Ocean Park.
In the third season, the Lincoln County War is over, but both Billy the Kid and Sheriff Pat Garrett, played by Alex Roe, have important cases to solve - a reckoning is coming. Billy is still on the loose and Garrett wants to capture him, dead or alive.
With a bounty on his head, Billy has the chance to leave New Mexico and build a future with Dulcinea, played by Nuria Vega, the love of his life. But he still has a bone to pick with Garrett, who betrayed him, and decides to stay. Meanwhile, Jesse Evans, Billy's old friend, rival and enemy, played by Daniel Webber, also remains in Lincoln, seeking new purpose and perhaps atonement for his sins.
As the final chapter in the saga comes to a close, Billy will fight like hell to finally find the justice that has eluded him for so long, even if it means he will die trying.
The series is produced by Amazon MGM Studios, in association with Amblin Television and De Line Pictures. Hirst produces alongside Donald De Line, Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey of Amblin Television.
“In season two, Michael Hirst, Donald De Line, along with Tom Blyth and the rest of our talented cast, captivated audiences with the dramatic events leading to the infamous Lincoln County War, during which Billy is struggling to hang on to both his soul and the love of his life,” said Michael Wright, head of MGM+. “In season three, we are excited to bring the naturally cinematic story of one of American history’s most fascinating, and often misunderstood, characters to its conclusion, as only MGM+ can.”
“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to write the third and final season of Billy the Kid and bring this compelling saga to a close,” added Hirst. “Billy was famous for many things, not least his ability to escape from seemingly impossible situations. But now, as the Most Wanted Man in America, the odds are truly stacked against him.”
