Hulu will not continue with a second season of its original drama series Black Cake. News of the series, starring Adrienne Warren and Mia Isaac, isn't surprising as it's been ten months since the first season ended on the streamer.
This is a formal resolution for the series from Women of the Movement creator Marissa Jo Cerar, Oprah Winfrey's Harpo Films and Aaron Kaplan's Kapital Entertainment, whose fate had been sealed for months.
That didn't necessarily have to happen - there are rumors that Netflix was interested in picking up the critically acclaimed drama, but the investigation didn't go far because program moves from one major streamer to another are very rare - and complicated - in the age of streaming -wars.
Netflix was one of the original suitors for the project, which ended up at Hulu in 2021 after a bidding war.
Black Cake is based on the book by Charmaine Wilkerson and has a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The first and only season of Black Cake earned NAACP Image Awards nominations for Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Writing in a Dramatic Series for Cerar, as well as a GLAAD Media Awards nomination for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series. Just two weeks ago, Cerar won a Humanitas Prize for Drama Teleplay.
Black Cake is a family drama wrapped in a murder mystery set in Jamaica, Rome, Scotland, England and Southern California. In the late 1960s, a runaway bride, Covey, disappears in the surf off the coast of Jamaica. It is feared that she has drowned or that she is fleeing the murder of her husband.
In present-day California, widow Eleanor Bennett loses her battle with cancer. She leaves her two estranged children a flash drive containing untold stories about her journey from the Caribbean to America. These stories, told by Eleanor, shock her children and challenge everything they thought they knew about their family's origins.
Chipo Chung, Ashley Thomas, Glynn Turman, Lashay Anderson, Faith Alabi and Ahmed Elhaj also star. The series was produced by Cerar, Winfrey and Carla Gardini of Harpo Films and Kaplan of Kapital Entertainment. Harpo's Emily Rudolf served as co-executive producer.
