Bodkin - Season 1

Bodkin tells the true story that the makers heard in a pub.

Wonderful to announce a television series like this. The subtitle as described above fits Bodkin perfectly. What is particularly striking about this series is that the fairly serious story is told with a big wink. Without it becoming too humorous. In addition, it has been decided not to use the standard storylines. It produces remarkable scenes on the one hand and witty one-liners on the other. The Irish dialect and the fantastic environment in which the filming takes place complete it in my opinion. There is also a downside. The ending is too exaggerated to be interesting or fun. Too bad, because that's why the idiosyncrasy of this series is so well done.

A trio of podcasters are sent to investigate the mysterious disappearance of three people in Ireland. The idyllic Irish town where this disappearance took place appears to hold more mysteries. The stiff population has several reasons for this. In their research, the trio therefore ends up in the most strange places. In addition to smuggling and crime, a nunnery also appears to play a central role in the mystery. The outcome is – of course – different than previously thought. The three also appear to have different reasons for being in Ireland. That makes collaboration complicated.

If you like black humor with a serious undertone, Bodkin is definitely recommended.

Irish Dubheasa 'Dove' Maloney (Siobhán Cullen, The Dry) is a foul-mouthed journalist. Due to her rather unorthodox approach, she is sent to her home country. What exactly happened remains unclear for a long time. Her direct approach does not change. In fact, it doesn't make her any happier for her two partners. Her witty comments regularly cut to the bone. Dove is used to giving up everything for the story to be written. She forgets that her behavior does not help her or others. Dressed in a black mid-length coat and hidden behind large dark sunglasses, she does not reveal anything when it comes to her own feelings. She does know how to villainously point out to others what she sees and finds.

Gilbert Power (Will Forte, Sweet Tooth) is a somewhat dorky man. He once wrote a very successful podcast. This was to the detriment of his wife and their relationship. He is still living off that success, but it is clear that he needs to release a good podcast again. It makes the mission in Ireland very important. The forced collaboration with Dove does not sit well with him. Yet, helpless as he often is, he manages to find his way between the two female colleagues.

Emmy Sizergh (Robyn Cara, Trying) is the youngest of the three. She compensates for her naivety and inexperience by working hard. She really looks up to Gilbert. When it turns out that he is not quite the one she expected, the bond with Dove becomes stronger. Not that Dove is expecting that because the young enthusiasm is greeted with cynicism and blunt comments. Emmy is therefore forced to increasingly choose her own path.

It produces remarkable scenes on the one hand and witty one-liners on the other.

If you like black humor with a serious undertone then Bodkin is definitely recommended. Shame about the exaggerated ending. The ending, probably intended as a grand one, misses the point. Extra disappointing because the intimate, small story is Bodkin's strongest point. In addition to the quirky and funny main characters, they make this series slightly different from other series.
