Netflix announces storyline of Bridgerton season four

Now that the dust has settled on Bridgerton season three, Netflix has revealed the candidate for the next season.

It's official – Benedict Bridgerton will take up the mantle in the fourth season of Shondaland's drama series as he searches for his 'Lady In Silver' Sophie.

15772 Luke Thompson in Bridgerton

In a teaser trailer, which you can watch at the bottom of this news story, Netflix announces that its "most compelling match will be unmasked" — a telling clue for fans of the books — before posing: "Welcome to the marriage market, Benedict."

A number of scenes with the Bridgerton brother are then shown before a short sketch with actor Luke Thompson in which he is presented with a suit "for the masquerade ball."

This builds on the teaser at the end of the season three finale, in which Eloise - who heads to Scotland with Francesca - promises to be back in time for their mother's famous masquerade ball. That's where Benedict and Sophie first cross paths in the books.

The official synopsis: "The fourth season of Bridgerton focuses on bohemian second son Benedict (Luke Thompson). Despite his older and younger brothers being happily married, Benedict doesn't want to settle down - until he meets a fascinating Lady in Silver at the his mother's masked ball."

Benedict's search for a romantic partner is the subject of the third book in Julia Quinn's series, An Offer From a Gentleman. The television series changed the order and season three began with the fourth book, Romancing Mister Bridgerton, which focuses on the romance between Colin Bridgerton, played by Luke Newton, and Penelope Featherington, played by Nicola Coughlan.

In season three, Benedict is in love with a woman named Tilly Arnold - a character who does not exist in the books - who opens him up to exploring his sexuality when she encourages him to engage in sexual activities with herself and another man, Paul.

“I think, for me, when we talked about Benedict’s storyline this season in the room, so many of us, including myself, felt like he reads as a queer character in Season 1 and 2. So we felt like we wanted to make sense of that,” Jess Brownell, who took over as Bridgerton showrunner in Season 3, told Deadline of the decision for him to agree to Tilly and Paul’s advances. “I think we will continue that storyline of him exploring his fluidity going forward. This isn’t the end of that.”

Because of Benedict's different path in the series, there were questions about whether his love couple will also be different than in the books, just as Francesca is destined for a queer 'happily ever after' with Michaela Stirling and not Michael Stirling.

The second part of Bridgerton season three was released about seven weeks ago and both parts of that season are dominating the Netflix Top 10 and currently sit at number four worldwide.
