Mandy Patinkin will guest star on NBC's Brilliant Minds

Brilliant Minds has added several guest actors to the first season.
Inspired by the late neurologist Oliver Sacks, Brilliant Minds follows revolutionary neurologist Oliver Wolf (Zachary Quinto) and his team of interns as they explore the last great frontier – the human mind – while also grappling with their own relationships and mental health.

Mandy Patinkin (pictured), Steve Howey and André De Shields will all appear in the thirteen-episode first season of Brilliant Minds, which begins Monday, September 23 on NBC.

Creator Michael Grassi announced the news during the Brilliant Minds panel at NBCUniversal's Television Critics Association summer press tour. “We have exceptional guest actors this season,” Grassi said, sharing that more could follow.

Patinkin, whose guest role spans two episodes, plays a general practitioner who visits Bronx General. De Shields appears in the pilot as an Alzheimer's patient. Howey appears later in the season as a member of a motorcycle gang working for Dr. Wolf is receiving treatment.

Brilliant Minds is inspired by Sacks' books The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat and An Anthropologist on Mars. The author, who died in 2015 at the age of 82, dedicated his life to studying the world's strangest and most baffling brain disorders as a window into human consciousness and believed in a new approach to the mentally ill and neuro-atypical people. His book Awakenings was also made into a film in 1990, starring Robert De Niro and Robin Williams.

Patinkin co-starred in the fifth season of Paramount+'s The Good Fight and most recently appeared in the Hulu mystery drama series Death and Other Details, which was canceled after one season.

Howey starred as Harry Tasker in CBS's True Lies, which was canceled after one season and thirteen episodes. His best-known television role is perhaps as Kevin 'Kev' Ball in Showtime's drama series Shameless (US).

De Shields is an American entertainer who played guest roles in HBO's Sex and the City, and both Law & Order and NBC's Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
