Brooklyn Nine-Nine - Season 8

And with the lights out, the curtain finally falls on Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Cool cool cool cool cool cool cool cool.

In the end, we quite rubbed off on each other. Title of your sex movie. – Holt to Jake

A sitcom that over the years greatly exceeded its own expected popularity. What once started as a small comedy on FOX transformed into a successful sitcom with a towering cult status on NBC. But what was season eight like? Well, the level went in all directions…

Let me jump straight into the police station with the elevator: the big 'problem' this season was the fact that the series and the writers felt they had to do something with the problems surrounding the police in America. And while I completely understand them and it certainly would have been weird if they hadn't told me about it, it chafed. Brooklyn Nine-Nine (also B99) was known as a series that always breathed cheerfulness. Even when they dealt with very complex matters such as discrimination or LGBTQ+-related topics, they did so sincerely, skillfully and with love, but always with a cheerful undertone. This also made such topics easier to discuss. That cheerful undertone didn't really fit the vehemence of this topic and while brave, the first few episodes of season eight didn't feel like real B99 episodes because of it.

After a difficult start, the B99 train really picked up steam from halfway through the season, culminating in the last two episodes. There are many - many - series that totally screw up their ending, but B99's ending goes down in the books as a genuine example for others. It's actually a tally of everything and everyone that worked best over the past eight seasons, along with plenty of flashbacks, in the form of…the ultimate heist. And if you're reading the review of season eight by now, I don't need to explain to you why a 'heist' is ultimately the very best way to close B99.

If I had had a son, and he would’ve turned out like you, I would be very proud of him. – Holt to Jake

With finesse, all kinds of historical jokes (the Backstreet boys, 'BONE' and Meep-morp) are crammed into new absurd situations. The last two episodes of Brooklyn Nine-Nine are therefore an absolute joy and one long cry of laughter for those who have a warm heart for B99.

I can fill pages here about B99 in general, because I think this is a must for anyone who even somewhat calls themselves a series enthusiast (yes, also for people who are 'not such a fan of (American) comedies in general'), but I'll stick with this.

Even though the first half of the season may not have been great, an ending like that for a series deserves a very, very good grade. NINE-NINE!
