Brot (The Valhalla Murders) is an Icelandic detective series which aired on RUV. The series premiered on December 26, 2019.

The show is about a police investigator named Arnar who travels from Denmark to assist in the investigation surrounding Iceland’s first serial killer. He has to work with Kata, the officer in charge of the case, and together they must race against the clock to find the murderer before it’s too late. While the victims initially seem unrelated, the trail leads them to an abandoned boys’ home named Valhalla, where some horrifying events occurred 35 years earlier.

A few good TV series have been made in Iceland in recent years, such as Trapped, Stella Blómkvist (slightly less) and Hamarimm (The Cliff). I always find it surprising to see that a country with a population of less than 350,000 has produced so many good actors. On Netflix you can now see the latest Icelandic crime series The Valhalla Murders. The series consists of 8 episodes of 45 minutes and was shot in winter, which provides beautiful images of the rugged Icelandic landscape. There are a few murders taking place in Iceland that puzzles the police. That is why the police team, led by Inspector Kata (Katarina), is reinforced with profiler Arnar, who returns to his native country from Oslo for this purpose. The only concrete clue they have is a photo. The story starts a bit slowly but fascinates very quickly. Nína Dögg Filippusdóttir plays Kata and Björn Thors plays Arnar and they do it very well. They are good at their job, but also have personal concerns that are given a place in the story. There is plenty of tension and it only increases as the story progresses. The music is very special and fits very well with the images that appear on your screen. I thought it was a good series that I enjoyed watching.

I thought it was a good series, but I thought it was a shame that a number of things were not right at the end or were explored less. Some storylines have weird ends. The acting level is very high and especially in the end it is super exciting. But all in all a 7 ...

Good Icelandic crimi, especially Nina Dögg aka Kata plays very natural and expressive. My point is that the images in Scandinavian series are often greenish, this one x 'enormous' blue with green. Hardly any red or any other color to be detected in the images.
