FOX cancels comedy series Call Me Kat with Mayim Bialik

Kat's cafe is closed. The FOX network has canceled the Call Me Kat sitcom, so there won't be a fourth season.

Call Me Kat is based on the British series Miranda. Starring Mayim Bialik, Swoosie Kurtz, Kyla Pratt, Cheyenne Jackson, Julian Gant and Jack McBrayer. Season three guest stars include Ken Jennings, Kevin Sussman, Vicki Lawrence, and Parker Young.

Due to the cancellation, the actual finale of the series already aired yesterday.

Call Me Kat

The story follows Kat (Bialik), a woman who fights against society (and her mother) every day to prove that she can live a happy and fulfilling life, despite the fact that she is still single at 39 years old. Kat's mother, Sheila (Kurtz), views her daughter's singleness as her own personal failure. After quitting her job as a college professor at the University of Louisville, Kat spends the money her parents had set aside before her marriage to open a cat cafe.

In addition to Kat, friends Randi (Pratt) and Gideon (McBrayer) work in the cafe. As Kat celebrates her independence, her plans to stay alone forever are derailed when her former love and good friend Max (Jackson) returns to town. Max takes a job as a bartender at the piano bar opposite Kat's house, working with his friend Carter (Gant).

Call Me Kat threatened to be canceled every year, but was renewed every time, until now. Ratings plummeted in season three, and since FOX only has room for two live-action sitcoms, the network decided to try something new. Last night's season finale had the feel of a series finale, so it seems the cast and crew had an idea that some bad news was coming.

The fate of Welcome to Flatch and Animal Control is not yet known. Flatch is produced by Sony and the studio made a very attractive deal that got it a second season last year. Animal Control is owned by FOX, so a second season renewal seems very likely.
