Carnival Row - Season 2

Carnival Row is a solid fantasy series that ends before it can really begin. A belated victim of the corona pandemic.

You had probably long forgotten about this series. That's not surprising either. The first season of Carnival Row already appeared on Amazon Prime Video in 2019. Production of the second season was delayed due to the corona pandemic and the birth of Orlando Bloom's baby. Thus, the second season of Carnival Row hit the streamer on February 17, a whopping three and a half years after the release of season one.

Carnival Row takes place in a world full of magical creatures. Through years of war, waged by the people in the land of the creatures, elves and fauns, among others, have had to flee their familiar homeland to human places. Places where people would rather not see them, even though people are the only reason why they had to flee. Carnival Row interweaves these themes of xenophobia, diaspora, revolutionary violence and political power games with an intriguing murder case. It keeps us a not-so-subtle mirror to our own 'real' world and what's going on there.

The Carnival Row cast is led by two big names: Orlando Bloom (mostly known from Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean) and Cara Delevigne (Only Murders in the Building). They play convincingly, just like the rest of the cast. This includes Simon McBurney (Rev.), Tamzin Merchant (Salem), David Gyasi (The Sandman), Karla Crome (The Victim), Andrew Gower (Outlander), Caroline Ford (Free Rein) and Arty Froushan (House of the Dragon).

The second season picks up where the first season ended. That works well, despite the long break. It was already announced before the premiere of the second season that season two would also be the final season. I think that has been a smart choice, as the ratings are likely to be quite disappointing with a break of more than three years between seasons. Yet you notice that there could have been more seasons. The second season ties a nice bow around the ongoing stories from the first season. The story is nicely finished. However, you find that, had the chance been there, this series could have been more; could have done more; could have told more stories. Especially the subplot of Imogen and Agreus is clearly not what the creators initially envisioned.

The ratings are likely to be quite disappointing with a break of more than three years between seasons.

Nevertheless, I enjoyed Carnival Row. The visuals are still fantastic, the sets (which resemble a kind of Victorian London) are very cool and the special effects are also well done. The acting is good. The plot is fine, although not super original. It's just fine. However, I dare say that this series also rides on the back of the big names from the cast, in terms of attracting an audience. That's fine. Carnival Row is very welcome in our modern fantasy series landscape. However, it is not the most special, or most original series you will watch this year.

From me a 7.5 for a nice final piece that could have been more, but which is also fine as it is. It is nice that the makers saw which cards they had in their hands and anticipated this, so that we as viewers were presented with a nicely concluded story.
