S. Epatha Merkerson, Oliver Platt and Marlyne Barrett, whose most recent contracts expired at the end of last season, have signed deals to extend their tenures on the NBC medical drama to 10 years, sources say.
Chicago Med, from Wolf Entertainment and Universal Television, is entering its tenth season and follows the emotional daily chaos of the city's trauma center with the latest technologies and the lives of the doctors, nurses and staff who hold it all together.
Emmy winner Merkerson plays Sharon Goodwin, the chief administrator of Gaffney Chicago Medical Center. Platt plays Dr. Daniel Charles, head of the psychiatry department. Barrett plays Maggie Lockwood, head nurse at the emergency room.
Merkerson, Platt and Barrett's new contracts ensure the continuity of Chicago Med, which is undergoing a major behind-the-scenes change ahead of season ten, with co-showrunners Diane Frolov and Andy Schneider stepping down after nine years. They will be succeeded by Allen MacDonald.
On-screen actor Dominic Rains departs as Dr. Crockett Marcel after five seasons.
Dick Wolf and MacDonald produce Chicago Med with Stephen Hootstein and Peter Jankowski. Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, produces in association with Wolf Entertainment.
Merkerson, who has worked with Wolf and NBC for 30 years on Law & Order and Chicago Med, won an Emmy, an Indie Spirit Award, a Golden Globe and a SAG Award for the 2005 film Lackawanna Blues. She also won two NAACP Image Awards for her long-running role on Law & Order.
Platt has a recurring role as Uncle Jimmy on FX's hit comedy-drama series The Bear, a role that earned him his fifth Emmy nomination, following nominations for Nip/Tuck, Huff (twice) and The West Wing.
