Chicago Med - Season 8 (DVD)

The eighth season of Chicago Med once again offers fascinating television from veteran Dick Wolf.

The seventh season of Chicago Med ended on a major cliffhanger, with Doctor Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss, Shameless) and Doctor Dylan Scott (Guy Lockard, The Blacklist) trapped in an apartment due to a fire. That fire will have major consequences for one of them.

The medical team is faced with a shortage of medical supplies in several episodes. There is also a major strike by the cleaning staff, which requires improvisation in a number of episodes. As head of psychiatry, Doctor Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt, Fargo) is the usual calm rock.

There is a major thread running through this season.

There is a major thread running through this season. This is the introduction of a major technological innovation: Operating Room 2.0. This is an operating room equipped with a form of artificial intelligence (AI) where doctors receive advice about the best possible care for patients. Some doctors and manufacturers have a firm belief in the technology and the financial returns, while others are more skeptical about this development.

In addition to discussion about its medical effectiveness, this common thread also causes several dilemmas: is the hospital aiming for maximum (financial) returns, or for medical returns? I expected the dilemma of public versus private, or wealthy versus minimally insured patients, to be more elaborated in the second part of the season. Instead, the writers opt for a purely dramatic approach to this development.

Despite this, the series continues to fascinate in this eighth season. This means that even after 163 episodes the series is not boring. There are two major personnel changes again this season. The head of the emergency room, doctor Ethan Choi (Brian Tee, Crash) gets married and leaves Gaffney Chicago Medical Center. At the end of the season, another doctor says goodbye and that will be a big shock for many viewers. This means that the ninth season can be looked forward to with even more excitement than this season.

This eighth season on DVD is unfortunately, just like the previous season, a bare-bones Universal release.

This eighth season on DVD is, unfortunately, just like the previous season, a bare-bones Universal release. There were no crossover episodes, but they didn't find anything else to add either. The 22 episodes are contained on five discs and are available in English language, German and French dubbed versions. In addition to the Dutch subtitles, these are also available in English, German and French. These subtitles are fine, clear and correct.

The ninth season started in mid-January 2024 in the United States and will only have 13 episodes due to the major strike. It has not yet been announced when Star Channel will broadcast the ninth season in the Netherlands.
