Chucky canceled by SyFy and USA Network

Chucky canceled by SyFy and USA Network

Chucky's murderous days are over - at least for now. SyFy and USA Network have opted not to make a fourth season of the horror-comedy series Chucky.
Chucky, based on the classic horror film, has been canceled after three seasons. The news comes four months after the finale of Part 2 of Chucky's third season aired on both NBCUniversal cable networks.

The series' creator/executive producer, Don Mancini, was eager to continue. He revealed in April that he had pitched a fourth season, saying at the time that "it's something I really want to do." His enthusiasm helped start the #RenewChucky fan campaign, which has rallied support for season four.

Needless to say, today's outcome isn't what he had hoped for, but Mancini, who also created and wrote the film franchise, remained gracious in his response and promised that this wasn't Chucky's last killing spree.

“I’m heartbroken over the news that Chucky won’t be coming back for a fourth season but am so grateful for the killer three years we did have,” he said. “I’d like to thank UCP/Syfy/Peacock/Eat the Cat, our awesome cast and Toronto-based crew — the best in the business — and finally, to our amazing fans, a big bloody hug. Your incredible #RenewChucky campaign really warmed Chucky’s cold heart. Chucky will return! He ALWAYS comes back.”

This marks the end of an era for Syfy – Chucky was the last UCP-produced original scripted series in the upper tier on the network. The other, Resident Alien, recently moved to USA Network with a significant budget reduction.

Amid the sobering reality of the declining ad-supported cable business, Syfy is now relying on Canadian (SurrealEstate, the upcoming Revival) and modest-budget independent productions like Electric Entertainment's The Arc for its original scripts.

Chucky was one of the signs of things to come - it was originally greenlit by Syfy, but eventually shared with USA Network so the two networks could share costs.

As for USA Network, after phasing out its original scripts in recent years, the network is back in the game with budget-conscious so-called "Blue Sky" procedural series that harken back to the network's heyday with hit series like Monk, Psych, Suits and White Collar. The first series under this initiative is the upcoming The Rainmaker, based on the novel by John Grisham.

The Chucky series follows the murderous escapades of the infamous murder doll. Chucky crosses paths with arch-enemies, old allies and new prey, as he tries to sow fear and chaos wherever he goes.

In season three, Chucky joined the most powerful family in the world, America's First Family, within the infamous walls of the White House. How did Chucky get here? What the hell does he want? And how can Jake (Zackary Arthur), Devon (Björgvin Arnarson) and Lexy (Alyvia Alyn Lind) reach Chucky in the world's most secure building while balancing the pressures of romantic relationships and growing up? Meanwhile, Tiffany faces her own looming crisis as the police hunt her for "Jennifer Tilly's" murderous rampage last season.

Chucky is produced by Don Mancini, Nick Antosca, Alex Hedlund, David Kirschner and Jeff Renfoe.

It's a shame in a way... The series wasn't really of good quality, but it was still enjoyable to watch.
The only character I could like was Nina Pierce but unfortunately we saw too little of her. That Devon Sawa had a recurring role every year was also nice.

Don Mancini always said that the cancellation of the series would not stop him from continuing new stories about Chucky in films. He saw no difference between series and film. So fans already knew that the story would always be continued. The problem is that the storylines now have to be simplified a bit, since a larger cast only comes into its own in a series.
