Criminal Record - Season 1

At Apple TV+ they also know how to make a good British crime series. Criminal Record is proof of that.

In 2009, Cush Jumbo (The Good Fight) and Peter Capaldi (Doctor Who) both had supporting roles in the third season of Torchwood. Jumbo played a young government official, while Capaldi played a seasoned veteran in the same department. Jumbo's character did not trust Capaldi's character and tried to go against him, but received little support from her colleagues. Fifteen years later, in Criminal Record, these two actors again play two characters who come into conflict with each other in a similar way.

Jumbo plays June Lenker, a detective who receives a report of a woman being threatened by her partner. According to this woman, her partner is responsible for a murder that took place twelve years ago. At that time someone had already been arrested for it. Lenker tries to reopen the old case, but is opposed from above. Especially Daniel Hegarty (Capaldi), a high-ranking detective who was responsible for the murder investigation twelve years ago, seems not to be happy and tries with all his might to keep the case closed.

The strong cast is led by Cush Jumbo and Peter Capaldi

In recent years, Capaldi has taken on the role of an intimidating elderly man several times and here he does it again. He simply radiates power and with one look he can make it clear who is actually in charge here. Jumbo also did not mince its words. In Torchwood and The Good Fight, among others, she has proven that she can create characters who do not shy away from anything, and this is clearly visible here too. The underlying power struggle that takes place between Lenker and Hagerty while the two reluctantly work together is the highlight of Criminal Record. Other actors such as Shaun Dooley (Misfits), Zoƫ Wanamaker (Britannia) and Tom Moutchi (Famalam) are also good additions to the cast.

Although Hagerty clearly has the profile of a villain, one wonders to what extent he is single-handedly responsible for the arrest twelve years ago and the subsequent cover-up. Just like more recent police series such as Blue Lights and Line of Duty, the writers take a critical look at how the police force works today. The system is flawed and Criminal Record shows that Hegarty and Lenker are just part of this system too. This is strongly evident, for example, in a scene where Hegarty talks to a suspect about paternity. These two men are not so different in essence, but different life choices keep them miles apart.

The storyline is strong, but sometimes a bit predictable

The story is a nice coherent whole and is well put together. The series is not entirely perfect. Despite the strong acting and interesting moral issues, the series gets off to a fairly slow start. Sometimes a series flows in a good way, but with Criminal Record that is not always the case, and that is a shame. But once the story gets going, the tension also increases. Yet this series rarely moves off the beaten path. Once it becomes clear what happened, it is reasonable to predict how the story will end. The ending is exciting enough, but I expected a bit more from a series with this ambition.

Criminal Record is a fascinating crime series that shows that you don't just have to zap to the BBC if you want to watch good British crime series; They also know how to do that at Apple TV+. Despite some flaws, Criminal Record excels in showing socially relevant themes and we see fantastic acting from Peter Capaldi and Cush Jumbo, among others. Although the first season is reasonably complete, a possible sequel would definitely not be out of place.
