ABC gives Cristela a full season, Selfie finds a new home

It’s not that the ratings of ABC sitcom ‘Cristela’ are very good, but they aren’t bad either. And so ABC has decided that ‘Cristela’ will not have 13 episodes but 22 episodes. This doesn’t mean that the sitcom will automatically get a second season, first the ratings have to improve, but ‘Cristela’ will now have until March to attract more viewers. Perhaps then ABC will renew the sitcom.

‘Cristela’ is about a young Mexican-American woman (Cristela Alonzo) who is working to become an attorney while juggling her responsibilities to her traditional family. The rest of the cast includes Maria Canals-Barrera, Carlos Ponce, Terri Hoyos, Gabriel Iglesias, Sam McMurray, Justine Lupe, and Andrew Leeds.

The premiere was on 10 October and it had 6.51 million viewers. That wasn’t so bad. But the ratings dropped and ‘Cristela’ now has an average of around five million viewers per episode. That is not very good for a Friday-night series but these days it isn’t bad either.

ABC already gave the new sitcom ‘Black-ish’ a full season order and cancelled the two new sitcoms ‘Manhattan Love Story’ and ‘Selfie’. The latter still had six more episodes and now all remaining episodes of ‘Selfie’ will soon be broadcast on Hulu, Hulu Plus and ABC.com.
