Devil in Ohio - Season 1

Suzanne Mantis' seemingly perfect family is in danger of falling apart in Devil, Ohio when she takes her patient Mae home.

Mae (Madeleine Arthur, Blockbuster) is hospitalized after being on the run. Confused and with the injuries of an inverted pentagram scratched into her back, it's up to psychiatrist Suzanne Mantis (Emily Deschanel, Bones) to get her to talk and find out what happened to her. She is helped by detective Lopez (Gerardo Celasco, Swimming with Sharks), although sheriff Wilkins (Bradley Stryker, The Lizzie Borden Chronicles) from the area where Mae comes from also wants to get involved. There is no trace of her parents and no one else has reported her as missing.

Suzanne is very concerned about the fate of the young girl and when there is no longer room for her in the hospital, she does not hesitate for a moment and takes Mae in to find a good foster family for her from there. Despite Suzanne's family (her three daughters and husband) doing their best, this is not without a struggle. Mae often behaves strangely and especially the middle daughter, Jules (Xaria Dotson, The Birch), has a hard time with it. Mae and Jules are the same age and Mae sees Jules as everything she wants to be. This is reinforced by the fact that Mae gets Jules' room and has to start wearing her clothes as well. Jules, on the other hand, has a hard enough time finding a place at school as a freshman and the arrival of Mae gives her the idea that her place at home is slowly but surely being taken.

And it is therefore questionable whether the safety of Mae will ultimately not be at the expense of the safety of Suzanne's family.

Together with Detective Lopez, Suzanne begins to unravel what happened to Mae. It soon becomes apparent that Mae has escaped from a satanic cult and it becomes clear what her role and fate was within that cult. A sect that, by the way, wants nothing more than to get her back and, if necessary, kill for her. This while Mae likes it very much with the Mantis family and she wants nothing more than to stay there permanently. As we learn more about Mae and her background, we also learn more about Suzanne's childhood and why she goes to such lengths to help Mae.

Suzanne seems blind to the effect Mae has on her family life and especially on Jules. But the daily problems her family members face (such as money worries, sexual orientation and performance drive) also pass her by as she becomes increasingly obsessed with Mae and does everything she can to make sure nothing happens to her. The family begins to fall apart more and more.

Eventually, it comes to an apotheosis during a school party and it becomes clear how far the sect, Suzanne but also Mae want to go to get what they want. And it is therefore questionable whether the safety of Mae will ultimately not be at the expense of the safety of Suzanne's family.

Devil in Ohio is based on the book of the same name by Daria Polatin and is described as a combination of horror, thriller and drama. This is certainly true, because the miniseries has elements of all those genres in it. The problem is that I didn't really like that combination here. There is quite a lot of room for the personal storylines of the different characters, who all have to deal with their own problems. Nothing wrong with that, it gives some depth to the story, but it seems that the creators of the series have therefore not dared to focus more on the horror and thriller part of the series.

An occult sect lends itself perfectly to horror and thriller, but it never really gets scary or frightening for a moment and there is no question of much tension. These genres clearly get snowed under by the daily worries of the characters. This is despite the fact that most of the horror clichés are present.

There is nothing wrong with the acting performances. I was a fan of Emily Deschanel in Bones and it was good to see her in a leading role again. In addition, the series is easy to understand and there is not much wrong with the story itself. But snowing under the horror and thriller part of the series ensures that the series does not stand out above the majority of the other series that can be watched.
