Devious Maids - Pilot

Many television series about the ‘rich and famous’ of Beverly Hills have been created . Therefore, it comes as no surprise that the latest series regarding these people provides a new perspective. 'Devious Maids', as the name already suggests, focuses on the cleaners of the celebrities. The series follows five Latina girls, all with their own dreams and ambitions, who are in pursuit of their happiness while they are also trying to solve the murder of one of their colleagues. The pilot definitely sets up the right atmosphere for the rest of the season, but the main plot will probably not be able to keep the audience interesting for thirteen episodes.

The pilot starts off with a great shot of a massive garden party in Beverly Hills, filled with beautiful and rich people. This raises the suggestion that you are watching the umpteenth series concerning the lives and lies of the Hills’ inhabitants. Then, however, the camera zooms out to a room upstairs, where a woman is lecturing her maid: 'I think what you people do is heroic. You wash clothes you can’t afford. You polish silver you will never dine with. You mop floors for people who don’t bother remembering your last name, and still you dare to dream of a better life.' This sentence illustrates the point of view of the entire series, even though this same maid is murdered only minutes later: even maids can have their dreams, and there is a chance they might even come true.

The series focuses on five cleaning-ladies from Latin-America, all five of whom are facing their own problems. Rosie (Dania Ramirez, 'Heroes') is a single mom who was forced to leave her son and is desperate to get him to America too. Carmen (Roselyn Sanchez, 'Without a Trace'), whose only dream is to become a famous singer, recently started working for a music manager, hoping he can help her produce her album. Zoila (Judy Reyes, 'Scrubs'), the oldest and most experienced maid, is employed by Genevieve, a drug-addicted and emotionally unstable woman. Simultaneously, she also has to make sure her daughter Valentina (Edy Ganem) does not run off with Genevieve’s son, Remi. Finally we are introduced to the new girl, Marisol (Ana Ortiz, 'Ugly Betty'), who does not have a Spanish accent and seems to be an educated woman. All five women have their own dreams and reasons to be maids, and together they are trying to cope with their dreadful bosses.

The atmosphere in 'Devious Maids' is fresh and summery, and even though the murder on one of the maids concerns everyone, it never gets too heavy. The cheerful salsa music certainly adds to the fact that it is an easy series which you can watch on a hot summer’s night without spending too much energy analysing the show. This also distracts the audience from noticing that some actresses are not as experienced and, therefore, sometimes try a little too hard. Furthermore, the leading roles are all portrayed by gorgeous women, which, seeing as they are only poor maids, does not increase the credibility of the show. However, the supporting characters are played by a fine cast who are clearly enjoying their roles. Hopefully, they will be able to keep this going, because the fact that the rich people living in Beverly Hills are criticised rather than adored is one of the strongest aspects of this new series.

The pilot of 'Devious Maids' shows enough promise to make you look forward to the follow-up. Hopefully, the focus will lie on the histories of the main characters and show why they decided to become cleaners, rather than elaborate on their bosses. The series provides the audience with a fresh look on Beverly Hills, but it will probably not turn out to be a revolutionary series for there are many stereotypes which show exactly what we expect to see. 'Devious Maids' certainly is not the best series released this year but it certainly does provide us with the type of entertainment we need for a hot summer’s night.
