Actress Jodie Whittaker and showrunner Chris Chibnall joined Doctor Who in 2017. They've now both decided to leave the series. Back in 2005, Doctor Who premiered. Jodie Whittaker (Broadchurch) first became part of the series back in 2017. Before her, the role of the Time Lord was always portrayed by a man. With the arrival of Whittaker, that changed. She became the first woman to portray the Doctor. It was expected that she would leave Doctor Who after the upcoming season. “My heart is so full of love for this show, for the team who make it, for the fans who watch it and for what it has brought to my life,” Whittaker said.
It won't be just an actress leaving the series. Showrunner Chris Chibnall (Broadchurch) has also decided to quit Doctor Who. Alongside Chibnall, executive producer Matt Strevens (Capital (2015)) will also leave the series after the thirteenth season. After that, they'll be part of several special episodes, which will air in 2022. It is not yet known who will portray the Doctor after Whittaker. It isn't known who's going to be the new showrunner either.
