Doctor Who - 2022 specials

In three Doctor Who specials, protagonist Jodie Whittaker appropriately bids farewell to her iconic role as the Thirteenth Doctor.

You used to see a new season of many series every year, but nowadays the producers sometimes take one or more years of rest. That is not to say that the series has completely stopped. Doctor Who is also such a series that used to return every year, but is now occasionally gone for a year. Also in 2022, there was no season release at all. We did get three special episodes in which Jodie Whittaker (Broadchurch) says goodbye to her role as the Doctor.

The three specials are titled Eve of The Daleks, Legend of the Sea Devils, and The Power of the Doctor and aired on January 1, April 17, and October 23 respectively. In Eve of the Daleks, the Doctor and her traveling companions Yasmin (Mandip Gill, Hollyoaks) and Dan (John Bishop, Fearless (2017)) are trapped in a time loop as they try to escape a warehouse full of Daleks. In Legend of the Sea Devils, they take on the reptilian Sea Devils in 19th century China as their path crosses paths with the pirate queen Madam Ching (Crystal Yu, Casualty). In The Power of the Doctor, the Doctor's greatest enemies - the Daleks, the Cybermen, and the Master (Sacha Dhawan, Iron Fist) - team up to destroy her for good.

The first two specials are nice, but not very special

The first two specials are relatively enjoyable. They're just amusing stories that could have fit into any season of Doctor Who. Eve of the Daleks resembles a deadly version of Groundhog Day and uses the time loop concept in a very creative way. This episode also has a nice guest star from Aisling Bea (This Way Up). Legend of the Sea Devils is a bit weaker in my opinion. It's a fun adventure, but nothing more than that. In these episodes, a certain side of the relationship between the Doctor and Yasmin is highlighted in a new way. This is an interesting move and fits well into the theme of impermanence and the approaching end of the Thirteenth Doctor.

The Power of the Doctor, on the other hand, is of a completely different caliber. The episode lasts almost an hour and a half and is very full. Not only does the Doctor have to deal with three of her greatest enemies, she also receives help from, among others, Tegan Jovanka (Janet Fielding, Murphy's Mob) and Ace (Sophie Aldred, Tree Fu Tom), two traveling companions who traveled with the Doctor traveled along. In addition, this episode has a lot of references to the classic series in particular, and a lot of unexpected familiar faces pop up. This can rightly be called a love letter and an ode to Doctor Who.

With a lot of nostalgia and a strong story, The Power of the Doctor offers a worthy farewell to the thirteenth Doctor

But besides being a love letter, The Power of the Doctor is also just a good and exciting adventure. Despite a long running time, the episode never feels too long or overcrowded. This incarnation of the Master is genuinely creepy and Dhawan plays the part with obvious pleasure. In the twelfth season, he already had an interesting link with the Cybermen and here too both opponents fit well into the story. I found the role of the Daleks a bit superfluous myself and sometimes it felt like they had been dragged in because they are such iconic monsters. Despite that, the Thirteenth Doctor has a fantastic and surprising final adventure in a beautiful and believable way. Even in her very last scene, there is a surprise that makes me very curious about the adventures of the fourteenth Doctor.

In three episodes, writer and showrunner Chris Chibnall manages to give a worthy farewell to this iconic thirteenth Doctor. There will also be no full season next year. We do get three special episodes in November to celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of Doctor Who and showrunner Russell T. Davies (who was also showrunner between 2005 and 2010) will take over from Chibnall. We'll have to wait a little longer, but I'm looking forward to it!
