Domina - Season 2

The time jumps in the story make the second season of Domina seem messy.

After an excellent first season, a somewhat inferior second season follows. The story of Livia Drusilla and her husband Emperor Augustus continues to intrigue through the use of manipulation and power games. In Roman times there was plenty of time and room for betrayal, fun and battle. Livia tries to position her two sons as best as possible in the center of power. Augustus, however, has other interests. He wants to give his own family as much power as possible. Both must make concessions and enter into various alliances. Moreover, there are other privateers on the coast ready to take on all the power of Rome.

Domitius is one of the biggest opponents this season. He has made a significant impact in obtaining money and power through corruption. His biggest problem is keeping the way this came about a secret. The famine that it caused in Rome requires in-depth research. Especially when Augustus and Livia discover that the famine was caused by corruption. Livia sends her loyal companion Tycho to investigate the case.

Livia's sons each follow their own special path. Drusus is addicted to gambling and finds his current and future role difficult. Tiberius is the one who regularly manages to keep Drusus on the right path. Unfortunately, Tiberius has his own dark side. It means that he is not always reliable.

The women of Rome are never far away. They conspire just as hard with their violent husbands. As a result, they often have more power than public formalities suggest. To the outside world, women are a commodity to forge powerful alliances. They are forced to divorce and remarry. Everything to connect the different families.

All these intrigues are well designed. Just like in the first season, the quality of the acting is good. It is striking that the people in this series do not age very much as time goes on. That time passes very quickly because almost after every episode there is a jump of several years. Only for Livia does the battle seem to have physical consequences. She may not age quickly, but her worries can be read from her face and attitude.

The jumps in time in the story are the biggest negative of this season. Shocking discoveries are made that normally require immediate action. In the second season of Domina, years can easily pass. It makes the whole thing quite unbelievable. Time may have passed more slowly in those days, but (always) waiting years before taking revenge is not very realistic.

Ultimately, this second season is still recommended for fans of films and series from Roman times.

Ultimately, this second season is still recommended for fans of films and series from Roman times. The clothes and entourage all look a bit too nice and clean. The language is English instead of old Latin and the people look a little too perfect for the time in which it takes place. Of course, this cannot be completely avoided, as the modern eye also wants something. On the other hand, the corruption, violence, murders and intrigues are all elements that indeed played a major role in the power center of ancient Rome.
