Echo - First episode

Small, personal, raw and violent. In its first episode, Echo bears little resemblance to other recent Marvel series, which is refreshing.

Marvel ended 2023 with the second season of Marvel's What If…? Less than two weeks later they kick off 2024 with a series of a completely different caliber: Echo. This is a spin-off of Marvel's Hawkeye. In that series, Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) aka Echo appeared as one of Hawkeye's opponents. She is deaf and missing a foot, but can fight very well. She also has ties to several characters from Marvel's Daredevil. This makes her a special and interesting choice for her own series.

In the first episode we see how Maya leaves for New York as a child with her father. Her father works in crime there, but at some point he is murdered. Top criminal Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio, Godfather of Harlem) alias the Kingpin takes Maya under his wing and she does all kinds of jobs for him. When she finally turns against him, she flees to her birthplace in Oklahoma. But even there she is not safe from Fisk's henchmen.

Echo is smaller and more personal than other recent Marvel series

Marvel's series operate on different orders of magnitude. In Secret Invasion and Marvel's Loki, the world's safety and the fate of the time-space continuum were at stake, respectively. Echo is a lot smaller and more personal and seems to revolve mainly around the feud between Lopez and Fisk. It's a story of personal glory, not of saving the world. This fact is refreshing and therefore bears little resemblance to many other Marvel series.

Yet Echo shows similarities with several less recent Marvel series, namely the series made by Netflix between 2015 and 2019. This is of course primarily due to the presence of Wilson Fisk. Daredevil (Charlie Cox, Boardwalk Empire) himself also makes an appearance in Echo. This not only makes you curious about the rest of this series. It also makes you very curious about the upcoming series Daredevil: Born Again.

The beautiful fight scenes we know from Daredevil are back

The tone and atmosphere of Echo also match those of the Netflix series. Everything is a lot darker and rawer and feels more mature. The violence is harsher, bloodier and dirtier. The Daredevil series was known for beautifully choreographed fight scenes consisting of long shots. This episode also contains such a scene and it is again enjoyable. I hope there are more moments like this in the rest of the series.

Despite the fact that this is a Hawkeye spin-off, Echo also seems to be able to stand on its own. Most of this first episode is basically one long flashback about Maya's childhood. The relevant scenes that we have already seen in Hawkeye are briefly revisited. This is a nice refresher for those who have already seen Hawkeye and a nice bit of context for those who have not.

Echo starts promisingly with a dark, personal atmosphere and a lot of violence. It therefore does not look very much like most recent Marvel series, and more like series like Daredevil and Jessica Jones. This fact is refreshing and makes you curious for more. The entire series consists of five episodes of about 45 minutes, so you'll be done with it in no time. I enjoyed the first episode myself and I'm very curious about the rest.
