Elvira - Season 1

The question is how naive Elvira can be.
If you see the trailer, it seems that Elvira has a humorous tone. When you start watching, Elvira turns out to be an ink-black drama. An emotional drama in which crime plays a major role. A mix of social and crime drama. That approach works well, but sometimes also ensures that the series is a little too much in two minds.

The introverted Elvira (Sara Klein Larsen, Advocaten) works as a receptionist in a brothel. When one of the prostitutes disappears, Elvira springs into action. She goes to investigate and uses the services of the corrupt police officer Køster (Peter Plaugborg, Ulven Kommer). This childhood friend of Elvira also runs the brothel. Enlisting his help turns out not to be a good choice. Elvira's private life is dominated by her addicted brother. She tries with all her might to show him that he needs to get his life back on track. That always ends in a big disappointment.

Elvira's approach is refreshing.

Elvira's naivety puts her in several awkward situations. She enters a world full of criminals without understanding the risks. The only help she can expect is from an ex-client of the missing prostitute. However, his help also raises questions. When the son of the missing prostitute comes under the care of Elvira, the game is on. He is apparently so important that several attempts are made to get him away from Elvira. It ensures that she becomes even more tenacious in her research.

Køster appears to have completely gotten into trouble. Because of his work for the brothel, he is vulnerable to manipulation. That is used by the criminals he encounters. His lavish lifestyle turns against him. Especially when his colleague at the police smells trouble. In response, Køster gets further and further into trouble. In private this becomes untenable. In addition, his relationship with Elvira is under pressure. Køster chooses self-preservation and not friendship. As a result, he sinks step by step further and further into the criminal swamp.

Elvira isn't exactly your typical hero.

Elvira's approach is refreshing. Elvira isn't exactly your typical hero. Her life takes place at the bottom of society. Her naivete is a bit too much of a good thing. Even if it is thumbs up, Elvira will still win it. In addition, the story has just too many plots. Everyone seems to have something to hide. It's all pretty far-fetched in that regard. On the plus side, the acting is generally excellent. Only with Køster does it sometimes feel like overacting. The rest ensures that an extremely grim but also realistic picture is painted of people who don't exactly have it easy.

The conclusion is therefore that Elvira is not your average crime or social drama. That is a positive thing. Unfortunately, as described above, there are also a number of critical points. In fact, it is difficult to put a good figure on it. The refreshing and idiosyncratic aspect deserves praise, but the sometimes lesser effect should also be reflected in the grade I give. With all that in mind, I give Elvira a seven and a half. It does justice to the pluses and minuses as far as I'm concerned.
