FOX cancels reboot series Fantasy Island after two seasons

The mysterious island resort has been shut down by FOX. The network has canceled the Fantasy Island series, so there won't be a third season.

The drama series Fantasy Island is based on the series of the same name that was shown on ABC for seven seasons between 1977 and 1984.

This version of Fantasy Island stars Roselyn Sánchez, Kiara Barnes and John Gabriel Rodriquez. Alexa Mansour has a recurring role. The story takes place in a luxury resort, where every fantasy of the guests is fulfilled, though they rarely come true as expected. Several people arrive at the resort with dreams and desires and leave enlightened and transformed by the magical realism of Fantasy Island.

Elena Roarke (Sanchez) is the steward of this mysterious island and descended from the iconic Mr. Roarke, played by Ricardo Montalbán in the original version. Elena is assisted by Ruby Okoro (Barnes), a young woman with an old soul who arrives with a terminal illness and is given a new life there. There's also pilot Javier (Rodriquez), the chief of transportation on the island and a jack of all trades, and Helene (Mansour), a young woman who comes to the island in search of her biological father.

Season 2 guest stars include Frankie J. Alvarez, James Denton, Izzy Diaz, Rachael Harris, Teri Hatcher, Cheryl Hines, Marie Osmond, Kyla Pratt, Jason Priestley, Andy Richter, Jai Rodriguez, and Lynn Whitfield.

The second season of Fantasy Island, which will air on Monday evenings, averages 0.20 in the 18-49 demographic and 1.77 million viewers. Compared to the first season, that's 32% less in the demo and 4% more viewers in the live+same day ratings (including DVR playback until 3:00 AM). In the live+7 days ratings, the episodes get over 50% more viewers.

Ratings for the series' first season weren't very good, and a significant drop in demo numbers this season likely hurt its survival. The network decided to give way to Fantasy Island for a new series. The last episode aired last Monday.

“We were very pleased with Fantasy Island’s fun and escapist creative, which we had hoped would gain strong traction among viewers,” according to a network statement. “Sony Pictures Television is an important partner of ours, and we look forward to continuing to work with them on Accused, Alert: Missing Persons Unit, Doc and the upcoming animated series Universal Basic Guys/Hoagie Bros. We’d also like to thank Fantasy Island’s cast, led by Roselyn Sánchez, Kiara Barnes and John Gabriel Rodriquez, crew and executive producers Liz Craft, Sarah Fain and Anne Clements for their partnership on the series.”
