The story centers on a British aristocrat, Lady Sarah Ashley (Kidman, The Undoing), who travels halfway around the world to confront her dissolute husband and sell a special possession: a million-acre cattle ranch in the Australian Outback called Faraway Downs. After the death of her husband, a ruthless Australian cattle baron, King Carney (Bryan Brown, C*A*U*G*H*T), plots to take her land, and she reluctantly allies herself with a rough-and-tumble cattle rancher (Jackman) to protect her farm. The compelling adventurous romance story is experienced through the eyes of young Nullah (Brandon Walters, Australia), a bi-racial indigenous Australian boy involved in the government's draconian racial policies now known as the 'Stolen Generations'.
Luhrmann also directed the 2008 Oscar-nominated film “Australia,” and now returns for the Hulu series, which premiered Oct. 21 at the SXSW Sydney Screen Festival.
Faraway Downs was directed, produced (with Catherine Knapman and G. Mac Brown) and co-written by Luhrmann, along with writers Stuart Beattie, Ronald Harwood and Richard Flanagan, with production and costume design by multiple Academy Award winner Catherine Martin . Faraway Downs is executive produced by Luhrmann, Martin, Knapman and Schuyler Weiss. 20th Television is the studio.
The series Faraway Downs premieres on Hulu on November 26. Internationally, it is not yet known how and by which streamer the series will be distributed.
