Netflix's official teaser trailer for Donald Todd's limited series Florida Man sees Mike Valentine (Édgar Ramírez, pictured) return to his hometown of Florida, where he finds himself caught up in a bizarre series of crimes.
The term "Florida Man" has become a popular meme in recent years because Florida men often make headlines for bizarre and absurd actions and crimes. Now it seems that the popular internet meme has sparked a television series that expands on the absurdities that Florida seems to attract.
The teaser trailer offers a first look at Ramírez' detective Valentine and the chaotic chain of events that unfold when he returns to his home state of Florida. The teaser trailer promises that Florida Man is full of sunshine, dark secrets, crimes and mayhem, much to the chagrin of Valentine, who would rather leave the state behind for good.
Florida Man will be an intriguing series on Netflix. In addition to being created by Todd, a producer also known for This Is Us and Ugly Betty, Jason Bateman, Michael Costigan, and Miguel Arteta have also signed on as producers.
The series also features an impressive cast including Anthony LaPaglia (pictured, Without a Trace), Abbey Lee (Lovecraft Country), Clark Gregg (Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Paul Schneider (Parks and Recreation). Otmara Marreror (StartUp), Lex Scott Davis (Rebel), Sibongile Mlambo (Lost in Space) and Emory Cohen (The OA) will also appear in Florida Man.
Florida Man follows Valentine, an ex-cop who lost his job because of gambling. But he may have a chance to redeem himself when he searches for a mobster's missing girlfriend. Unfortunately, this mission leads him to Florida. Although it's his home state, he makes it clear that he doesn't like Florida and wants to solve the case and leave as soon as possible. But because it's Florida, he soon discovers that escaping his hometown won't be so easy and instead, he's drawn into a world of crime and dark secrets.
Todd hasn't said much about the premise of his new series yet. But given the name, the inspiration certainly seems to come from the viral Florida Man memes. Netflix has also promised that the series will dig much deeper than the memes. While there are plenty of examples of scandalous headlines, Florida Man is a fictional story inspired only by popular memes. The story will construct a very fictionalized account of what one can imagine happening in Florida upon seeing the output of outlandish news headlines.
