Why can't I stop watching this? Why?! It's just Heartbreak High, but immersed in all the American clichés you can think of. The high school where performing is the greatest good and you don't participate if you're not a jock or shinet (pronounced: sjeint) on the sidelines with a much too short skirt and pompoms in your hand. Where the family is the cornerstone of society and strict yet just apparently still the only educational method. Where that ugly guy eventually gets the most beautiful girl in school, because the scales fall from her eyes and she sees that inner beauty can also be so incredibly beautiful. Not to mention the struggling black guy who, of course, grows up without a father and wants to take all the pressure of his family by becoming a pro baller. And as if all that wasn't bad enough, they put every chance they get with those sentimental garbled tunes to make the whole thing tear-jerkingly awful. And I watch it and enjoy every minute of it. Maybe it's because Friday Night Lights isn't about spectacular chases and over the top explosions, but purely about the inhabitants of the Texas inbred village of Dillon and their daily worries. For example, they all do it together (that's the way it goes there) and it remains interesting to see how the different characters relate to each other and are further developed. Because essentially nothing spectacular happens, you need a few episodes to let the protagonists get under your skin. Once they've settled in there, there's no stopping it. For me then. If you don't like it at all, I understand that too. In fact, you are more than right about that.
