Glee - Season 1

'Glee' is a series that is immensly popular in and outside of America. Despite the fact that the series didn't even air two complete seasons yet, it is hard to imagine that I ever survived the week without an episode of 'Glee'. There are very few series that are able to entertain me like this on a weekly basis. And does that have something to do with the music? Darn, yes!

The story of 'Glee' revolves around a glee club at a high school in the USA. The group consists of nerds and more of the school's misfits who all turn out to be able to sing. Obviously, life isn't always a bed of roses for this glee club. They have to deal with loads of bullying and other problems in and outside of school. Familiar situations for everybody who experienced something similar, but in this case it's accompanied with some very good music.

New talents have been cast for the series. You won't have seen the main part of the cast before in other series, however, actors like Lea Michele, Matthew Morrison, and Jenna Ushkowitz aren't new to Broadway's red carpet.

'Glee' is worth watching for a whole bunch of reasons. The series is funny and entertaining, it makes good use of familiar, though sometimes faint, high school humour. But the main reason to love 'Glee' is, of course, the songs. They do not only sing the more popular contemporary songs but also songs from a while back will be heard. I admire the music producers behind the series who have manage to equip every song with a new, unique touch. Though it may be only due to the actors who are able to preform the numbers excellently. However, not every song is as good as others, but it contains real gems that are absolutely worth listening to.

At the same time, the series doesn't really struggle with heavier topics such as being bullied at school or being publically gay and being punished for that. A few of these subjects are, to this day, still controversial in America and, therefore, it can only be admired that 'Glee' picks up on these topics and tries to make them discussable. Due to this, the series appears to not only be entertaining, but it also tries to teach the younger generations a some wise lessons. There are advocates of both sides in the debate on whether this is the right medium to do so, but it is a good effort.

So what shouldn't you expect from 'Glee'? Do not expect a deep, surprising plot and unique characters. The series borrows a lot from movies like High School Musical and it aims towards the younger viewers amongst us. Whether you are going to like 'Glee' or not depends completely on your personal preferences. If you are not a fan of musicals and you hate light-hearted humour, then 'Glee' is not a series for you. But if you don't mind a good song, performed as musical, and an easy smile, then you're quite right for 'Glee'.
