This column supports the Series of the Year election 2021 and discusses the superhero category. You can vote for your favourite series in this genre and others, between Wednesday 5 January and Sunday 6 February.

What is better than finding yourself in a world that is so far from ours? A world where you can lose yourself in the too-perfect bodies, the too-dramatic love lives and the overpowered superheroes. This is a party to people who need some distraction from the, sometimes, harsh reality.

Down below, you'll find a list packed with heroic series. And this year looks quite a bit different in comparison to the previous years. Where The CW (DC) has always been the purveyor, this year, that was no longer the case. A whole different company has entered the building, Marvel. And I expect them to absolutely destroy the competition. But, with a superhero series, you never know for certain. There's always a plot twist in the last minute....

Down below, you'll find the top ten nominees of this category in alphabetical order:

Doom Patrol

If you like strange, stranger, strangest, this is your series. Crazy storylines and bizarre characters. A party of randomness. It is truly unique in its genre. Because of that, it's not that strange that Doom Patrol has been nominated.

The Flash (2014)

Ah, sometimes it's nice to see a trusted name. And trusted it is. For the seventh time (!), The Flash (2014) has been nominated in this category. It didn't win often due to the extreme popularity of the modern cult series Arrow. Nonetheless, it is an amazing achievement.
Here, you can read the reviews that were written about The Flash (2014).

Jupiter’s Legacy

This was supposed to be Netflix' answer to the Arrowverse and the MCU. Did that work? Opinions differ, but Netflix has decided that the series will not return for its second season. But with a lot of votes in the monthly poll and on the (Dutch) forum, this series has managed to acquire a nomination.

Marvel’s Hawkeye

Did someone expect Hawkeye to be such a fun hero? I certainly didn't. The down-to-earth portrayal by Jeremy Renner and the energetic Hailee Steinfeld as Kate Bishop turn out to be a wonderful combination. For once, there is no huge cosmic problem, but just crimefighting in the streets of New York. This is exactly what Marvel needed, which is why this nomination is well-deserved.

Marvel’s Loki

The reason for this nomination: Tom Hiddleston. I don't need to say more, actually. Everyone would want to have Loki as their best friend. Even though he is officially a 'bad guy', he always manages to find the right reason, which could actually make the viewer think "Well, I could do that for those reasons". A wonderful series that definitely deserves the nomination.

Marvel’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

I'm going to be honest with you. This series wasn't part of my own nomination list. But luckily, it is not only up to me. The team of MySeries writers thought this series deserved an animation. I must admit, Sebastian Stan did a great job in this series, so I don't think the nomination is entirely undeserved.

Marvel’s WandaVision

Let's start off our new series adventure in the MCU with a comedy that deals with the loss of love. Yes, of course, that is going to work. Nobody - and I repeat, nobody - expected that this show would work as well as it did. With truly phenomenal acting by Elizabeth Olsen and Kathryn Hahn. I'm not allowed to advise voters, but I would definitely vo[...].

Marvel’s What If…?

It is not often that an animated series ends up being nominated in this category. But for everything, there is a first time. And honestly, the fact that this wonderful series has been nominated is quite fair. And with all the rumours about some of these characters coming to live in the live-action MCU, this may be the 'must-see' of the upcoming months.

Superman & Lois

After all that Marvel violence, we've finally reached another DC nomination. This CW series has a different kind of approach than the previous Arrowverse series, and it works. With a charismatic Superman in the lead, it isn't crazy that this series has been nominated.

Titans (2018)

A bit of a stranger in our midst, but what a wonderful series to watch. Rough, harsh and not afraid to shock. With so many favourite characters from the Batman family, this is truly a pleasure to watch for the diehard comic-lover. In my opinion, this is currently the best DC series out there. But, who am I to say that?

And? Who do you think is going to win this award this year? Are there any series that could beat the Marvel violence? Let me know in the comments. One thing is for certain, if you love this genre, you've got lots to watch in the coming years. Disney+, Netflix, Amazon Prime and HBO Max. 'What a time to be alive!'

These were all the ten nominees that were nominated by you, the readers, the writers and myself. If you want to pick a different series, you can always decide to use a wildcard. Good luck voting! And don't forget: with great power, comes great responsibility!
