Great Expectations is Steven Knight's highly anticipated return to the world of Charles Dickens and the BBC has now unveiled its first teaser trailer.

The FX/BBC adaptation stars Olivia Colman (The Crown) as Miss Havisham and Fionn Whitehead (Black Mirror: Bandersnatch) as Pip, alongside Tom Sweet (Gunpowder) as young Pip.

In the brief look at the upcoming series, Miss Havisham meets young Pip when he first arrives at Satis House, grinning ominously, "What a precious creature we have fished out of the river."

The limited series will air on BBC One and iPlayer in the spring and will stream on Hulu in the US. Internationally, it will be available to stream on Star+ in Latin America and on Disney+ under the Star banner at a later date.

Great Expectations is the coming-of-age story of Pip, an orphan who yearns for a greater destiny in life until a twist of fate introduces him to the mysterious and eccentric Miss Havisham and Estella (Shalom Brune-Franklin, The Tourist) , and shows him a dark world of possibilities. Among the great expectations placed on him, Pip will have to figure out the cost of this new world and whether it will really make him the man he wants to be.

The six-part series also stars Ashley Thomas (The Ipcress File), Johnny Harris (Fortitude), Hayley Squires (The Essex Serpent), Owen McDonnell (Killing Eve), Trystan Gravelle (The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power), Matt Berry (What We Do in the Shadows) and Rudi Dharmalingam (The Split).

Peaky Blinders creator Knight is an avid Dickens fan who previously adapted A Christmas Carol (2019) for the BBC and FX. He produces Great Expectations along with previous collaborators Tom Hardy, Ridley Scott, Dean Baker, David W. Zucker, Kate Crowe and Tommy Bulfin. Brady Hood and Samira Radsi are the directors.

Great Expectations is produced by FX Productions in association with the BBC, Scott Free and Hardy Son & Baker.
