The Chastain Memorial staff has been laid off. To little surprise, FOX canceled The Resident, so there won't be a seventh season.

The Resident is a medical drama series starring Matt Czuchry, Manish Dayal, Bruce Greenwood, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Jane Leeves, Anuja Joshi, Jessica Lucas, Miles Fowler, Kaley Ronayne and Andrew McCarthy.

The series follows a group of doctors at Chastain Memorial Hospital who face personal and professional challenges on a daily basis. Although the motto is "Committed to excellence," the hospital is made up of people, and people are flawed. Staff includes Chief Constable Conrad Hawkins (Czuchry), Internist Devon Pravesh (Dayal), Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr. AJ Austin (Warner), Veteran Physician Randolph Bell (Greenwood), Neurosurgery Assistant Billie Sutton (Lucas), Surgical Intern Leela Devi (Joshi), emergency physician Kincaid 'Cade' Sullivan (Ronayne), renowned pediatric surgeon Ian Sullivan (McCarthy), and CEO Dr. Kit Voss (Leeves).

While The Resident has been one of FOX's most-watched scripted series, the series was nearly canceled a year ago during negotiations with the series' studio, 20th Television (now owned by Disney). The cancellation comes as no surprise this year, as the series' sets have been torn down and much of the furniture has been auctioned.

In response to the cancellation, The Resident creator Amy Holden Jones wrote, “It was an amazing series. The Resident lives on commercial-free Hulu. Today is a day of gratitude for our amazing cast and crew and the life-changing experience we shared."

The Resident won't be returning for the 2023-24 season, but FOX hasn't given up on medical dramas. The network recently placed an order for a new series titled Doc, based on the Italian drama series Doc - Nelle tue mani.

The Hollywood Reporter reports that Czuchry has been cast to take part in the next season of FX's American Horror Story, which is also being produced by 20th Television.
