The journey to find that "one piece" has begun in the latest trailer for Netflix's upcoming live-action series based on the popular manga.

During a panel at San Diego Comic-Con, audiences got their first look at the trailer - which heralds an action-packed adventure - before it was shared with the rest of the world. The trailer opens the same way the story begins in the manga, with the previous pirate king announcing One Piece's existence just before he is executed.

From there it gets intense. The trailer mainly shows a much closer look at Monkey D. Luffy (Iñaki Godoy) and the Straw Hat Pirates, as well as part of their journey across the seas.

Based on Eiichiro Oda's manga title, One Piece (2023) follows the otherworldly adventures of Monkey D. Luffy and his pirate crew as they explore exotic islands and endless oceans in search of the ultimate treasure 'One Piece' to become the next Pirate King.

Along with the trailer, Netflix also released a letter from Oda about the upcoming series, which is embedded in its entirety below. He started by thanking the fans for their enthusiasm so far.

“It’s already fun seeing the flurry of reactions after each release of information,” he wrote. He was also quick to remind fans that, while the story is adapted from the popular manga series, they should expect some changes from the source material.

“After the launch, I’m sure I’ll hear about some people pointing out how this character is missing or that scene is omitted, or this bit is different from the manga, but I’m sure they’ll come from a place of love,” he continued. “So I intend to enjoy even those comments!”

One Piece (2023) stars Iñaki Godoy (The Imperfects) as Monkey D. Luffy, along with the Straw Hats played by Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd (Hunters (2020)) as Nami, Jacob Romero Gibson (Greenleaf) as Usopp, and Taz Skylar (The Lazarus Project) as Sanji.

The cast also includes McKinley Belcher III (Ozark), Morgan Davies (The Girlfriend Experience), Aidan Scott, Vincent Regan (The Bay (2019), Jeff Ward (Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Craig Fairbrass, Langley Kirkwood (Banshee), Celeste Loots, Alexander Maniatis, Ilia Isorelýs Paulino (The Sex Lives of College Girls), Chioma Umeala and Steven Ward ( Queen Sono).

Steven Maeda (Lost, The X Files) and Matt Owens (Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Luke Cage) are the writers, executive producers and showrunners. Oda, Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements also produce.
