Emily the Criminal, the 2022 crime thriller starring Aubrey Plaza, is being turned into a television series.

Legendary Television is developing a series based on the film, which was written and directed by John Patton Ford. Plaza does not play the leading role this time, but is involved as an executive producer. This comes after the company acquired the rights in a competitive situation.

The film follows Emily (Plaza, photo), who is saddled with student debt and excluded from the labor market due to a minor criminal record. Desperate for an income, she takes a shady job as a 'dummy shopper', buying goods with stolen credit cards from a handsome and charismatic middleman named Youcef (Theo Rossi).

Faced with a series of dead-end job interviews, Emily soon becomes seduced by the fast money and illegal thrills of black market capitalism and becomes increasingly interested in her mentor Youcef. Together they devise a plan to take their business in Los Angeles to the next level.

Megalyn Echikunwoke and Gina Gershon also co-starred in the film, which was financed by Tyler Davidson's Low Spark Films in association with Fear Knot Productions.

Plaza produced through her Evil Hag Productions banner, alongside Davidson and Drew Sykes for Low Spark. Kevin Flanigan, Dexter Braff, Angus Wall, Kent Kubena, Lowell Shapiro and Mike Dill served as executive producers.

Ford will direct and executive produce the series. Plaza will executive produce the series for Evil Hag Productions alongside Low Spark's Davidson and Sykes.
