The Diplomat (US) is returning to Netflix just in time for the upcoming presidential election.

In the first season of The Diplomat (US), Keri Russell played a seasoned Foreign Service officer who is about to take her next posting in Afghanistan when the White House calls her with a change of orders and sends her to London as the U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom, and a possible future job as vice president.

It’s not the behind-the-scenes world she thrives in, but with war brewing on one continent and boiling over on another, her skills turn out to be quite useful. Kate must manage international crises, forge strategic alliances in London and adjust to her new place in the spotlight—all while trying to survive in her marriage to fellow diplomat and charismatic political star Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell).

He’s negotiated an end to his wars, but sharing the spotlight with a woman who’s long lived in the shadows could be his most challenging mission yet. This political drama explores the transcendence and torture of long-term relationships between countries and people.

Netflix has announced that season two will premiere on Thursday, October 31. Along with the start date, two first look photos of lead actress Keri Russell were also released (see above and below this news story).

Neither photo gives much information about what will happen in season two, although they both give off a rather somber tone. Without giving away any spoilers for the first season, this would make sense given the explosive finale.

In addition to Russell, season two will also see Rufus Sewell, David Gyasi, Ali Ahn, Rory Kinnear, and Ato Essandoh return. Allison Janney also joins the cast in season two as Vice President Grace Penn.

Debora Cahn, Janice Williams, Keri Russell, Peter Noah, and Alex Graves will executive produce the series.
