Grease: Rise of the Link Ladies canceled by Paramount+

It's time to say goodbye to Rydell High School. Paramount+ has canceled Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies.
Tax deduction season is not over yet. After Warner Bros. Discovery canceled the Batgirl movie last August, many people in the industry took a closer look and that has resulted in a season of cancellations that still hasn't stopped. The latest series to take a hit is Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies as Paramount+ has decided to pull the original series off the platform for a tax deduction, Deadline has reported.

Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies

The move comes as Paramount+ begins its merger process with Showtime later this month, and months after the streamer canceled series like Coyote (2021), Guilty Party and The Twilight Zone (2019), citing lack of interest from fans. Once again, Paramount+ has canceled three other series to write off, including their Original Star Trek: Prodigy, Queen of the Universe and The Game. All will be permanently removed from the Paramount+ platform, but according to the report, the studios plan to sell some of them to rival stations and streamers.

The series was created by Annabel Oakes and premiered in April this year. The series is a prequel to the 1978 John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John classic Grease and is based on the musical of the same name by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey. Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies is one of the many series the streamer had ordered based on its movie IPs like Fatal Attraction and the mini-series The Offer which told the story of the making of The Godfather.

Set four years before the events of the original feature film, the series follows four high school misfits who want to have fun together on their own terms. This sends waves of moral panic through Rydell High and changes it forever. The series has a 64 percent audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes with a general consensus that the nostalgia failed to strike the right chord with fans and critics alike. The music tracks are decent, but don't have the same impact as the predecessor.

The series stars Marisa Davila as Jane, Cheyenne Isabel Wells as Olivia, Ari Notartomaso as Cynthia, Tricia Fukuhara as Nancy, Shanel Bailey as Hazel, Madison Thompson as Susan, Johnathan Nieves as Richie, Jason Schmidt as Buddy, Nicholas McDonough as Gil, Jackie Hoffman as Principal McGee, with Chris McNally, Charlotte Kavanagh, Niamh Wilson and many more. Executive producers are Marty Bowen, Adam Fishbach and Alethea Jones, who directed the pilot and two other episodes.
