Grey's Anatomy - Seizoen 9

There’s a consistency in quality in ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ that is rare on television. After eight successful seasons the show hasn’t lost much steam and managed to grow a great deal. Season 9 is no exception. The quirky music and clumsy meet-cutes from Season 1 have largely dissolved. Meredith Grey is no longer the emotionally tormented girl who’s in love with her boss. She’s now a mother who juggles a tough job while maintaining a steady relationship with the man of her dreams. That premise is merely the foundation of the show ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ is today. Diapers and day care only appear in tiny amounts as Meredith and her colleagues battle saving lives, passing their boards and surviving a plane crash.

The season doesn’t pick up right where we left off. Meredith and Cristina aren’t lost in the cold wilderness after their plane went down. In the season premiere, Meredith is back at Seattle Grace and her regular life has begun again. Cristina, however, is in Michigan, where she has to adapt to the rules of her new workplace. Derek’s hand is recovering slowly and Mark is in a coma. Arizona’s fate is up in the air for much of the premiere as Callie tries to hide her grief from the outside world. The time jump allows the trauma from the crash to ease down while also introducing us to a new batch of interns. The new interns are a breath of fresh air as Meredith has become the new Bailey, with her very own nickname. She’s an intern no more.

The season deals with the plane crash in a remarkable fashion. It’s not something that happened and is easily forgotten. It’s ripples flow into many storylines, one of which deals with the responsibility Owen had. The survivors sue the hospital and the money at stake changes the lives of everyone. It’s an unexpected twist but one that feels grounded and realistic enough. It takes us away from the procedural side of the show that features a couple of patients a week. Much like the merger back in Season 6, the lawsuit affects the hospital and its employees. It changes dynamics and makes the plane crash less of a shock value ploy. It also brings the characters closer together, which is a welcome feat after the cast has grown large over the past years and slimmed down with the departures in the Season 8 finale. These characters are now connected and it gives the season a backbone that much of the earlier seasons missed. ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ has stumbled and succeeded with juggling many characters before but Season 9 is definitely a success largely because every character gets the attention they deserve.

Relationship issues are still very much the reason to watch ‘Grey’s Anatomy’. The friendship between Meredith and Cristina is tested now that they are separated. They always call each other “their person” but how much of that still remains when both of them have a significant other in their lives? Another powerful friendship tested is that of Bailey and Webber. It reaches an emotional high point in the mid-season finale when Bailey chooses to operate on Adele instead of attending her own wedding. The scene that features a wedding dance on ‘My Funny Valentine’ is bound to touch your heart strings. Which hurts even more as their friendship hits a critical point later in the season when a virus kills several patients and the loyalty between Webber and Bailey is tested. A storyline that ends dramatically, to say the least. The couple of Jackson and April serves to bring back some of that “will-they-won’t-they” the show missed since Meredith and Derek settled down and Cristina and Owen remain connected. Luckily, the two have a lot of other things going on as well including promotions for both of them. And Alex, poor, unfortunate Alex who wasn’t on the plane and still manages to ruin his own life gets a love interest. But with his track record of ladies the season is a strong story about how he deals with his past.

One of the best parts of Season 9, that sets it apart from the rest of the ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ crop, is that the characters have become incredibly self-aware. As Cristina summed up in the Season 8 finale, these characters have been through a lot. Bombs, drownings, shootings and now a plane crash. The entire season, several characters reflect on this, which makes it that much more believable that these things could happen to the same group of people. Some of the other highlights of Season 9 include guest appearances by Scream’s Neve Campbell, House of Cards’ Constance Zimmer and One Tree Hill’s Hilarie Burton. Special cases involve a transgender couple, a boy whose both parents are both in danger and a family weekend that goes awry. These small portions of the season add to a bigger picture that exemplifies the show.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’, in its ninth season still does character drama just as well as it does procedural cases and multi-episode story arcs. It remains one of the best, most watched shows on television. It does so by paying attention to the characters and relationships that matter while also sporting huge events such as the season finale that is bound to emotionally wreck you. If you haven’t been a fan of the show, this season won’t change your mind, but if you’ve been following for a while, the show is as good as ever and isn’t looking to change that for a while.
