Hacks - Season 4

This season Hacks knows how to touch you to the core. Deborah and Ava are a pleasure to watch.
Over the past few years, Hacks has secretly become one of my favorite series. It happened a bit unexpectedly. Still, I can't help but admit it. Hacks just knows exactly how to strike the right chords. In addition, the humor is just wonderfully crude and witty. Really great.

We pick up the season where we left off last time. Deborah (the always phenomenal Jean Smart) has reached her peak: late night host. And Ava (Hannah Einbinder) has claimed a seat at the table. As head writer, mind you, while Deborah didn't like that. The relationship between the two women is on edge and even threatens to break apart. It hurts a little as a viewer, because they've come so far!

''Even when these two hate each other's guts – which is most of the time – this truly is one of TV's best love stories.'' - Hannah J Davies, The Guardian

This season has a slightly different flow. It's a bit more serious. More issues are brought to the table that were previously undiscussed. Not only with Deborah and Ava, also the relationship between Jimmy (Paul W. Downs) and Kayla (Megan Stalter) is visibly developing. And that remains the strength of Hacks. It's more than just jokes and gags, it's a funny drama series about comedy. It's really something different. The characters make Hacks what it is and that's why it's scored high at the Emmys for years in a row.

Despite the different flow, the season does move in a certain direction, a new direction. Each season of Hacks knows how to add new elements, change the setting or put the relationships on edge. And each time in a different way. That makes it unpredictable and never boring to watch. I am therefore very curious where we will move in the next season. Just like last year, the last episode tastes like more.

And fortunately, HBO has just as much faith in Hacks as the fans and critics do, and the series has already been renewed for a fifth season.

About the writer, Karzal

Karzal
Mike (1995) has been a member of MySeries since 2016 and is mainly active on the English version of the site. Since 2018, he has been actively translating news articles, columns, reviews and basically everything that ends up on the Dutch site. The original articles, columns and reviews were actually written by others. During the week Mike can be found at IKEA, where he is a national systems specialist and occasionally also in the classroom to teach an English lesson. In addition, Mike logically enjoys watching series and has actually been spoon-fed this from an early age. The genre doesn't matter, there is a place for everything in the otherwise busy life.
