Knights of Sidonia - Seizoen 2

The second season of Knights of Sidonia or Sidonia no Kishi is set a few months after the events of the first season.

After the climactic battle at the end of the first season, Nagate finds himself recognized as Sidonia’s ace pilot. However, when a new Gauna threat appears, Sidonia’s newest secret weapon is revealed: an incredibly powerful Human-Gauna hybrid named Tsumugi who has the voice of Nagate’s dead girlfriend, Shizuka Hoshijiro. The Human-Gauna hybrid is easily one of the best things in the second season. With amazing visuals, a great story and man what a strength it got. She knows how to kill Gauna with brutal efficiency. But, she is also a young girl who has just been born and is already ordered to fight in a war. It brings mixed feelings. As the young girl she is very attached to Nagate, Izana and Yuhata, but as the Gauna hybrid she is also very focused on her goal, destroying the Gauna. This season is also very focused on the relationships of the group. While Izana and Tsumugi try to figure out if there is a romantic relationship with Tanikaze, neither realize that they are in fact in some sort of a love quadrangle.

In short, this season lacks some action in comparison with the first season. However, it doesn’t get too boring. Also, the visuals are, like the first season, very good. The emotions of the characters could be heard in the voices and it was overall very good. Just like the first season, this second season covers the manga very well. I watched both the Japanese and the English versions and I stick to what I said in my review of the first season, some things are meant to be kept original. The voice performance hasn’t changed and that doesn’t really matter because the characters haven’t changed either (well, they haven’t changed drastically).

It is said the anime will be continued in a third season, but that has yet to be confirmed.
