Maura Tierney has been cast in a series regular role for season 24 of Law & Order

Maura Tierney returns to NBC and joins the cast of Law & Order for the upcoming 24th season.

The announcement follows the departure of Camryn Manheim as Lieutenant Kate Dixon at the end of season 23.

Details about Tierney's (pictured) character are not yet revealed, except that she will play a new lieutenant in the Dick Wolf series.

Manheim left the series after Sam Waterston announced his departure as District Attorney Jack McCoy in February. Tony Goldwyn later joined as the new district attorney.

Law & Order is a police procedural series and legal drama that gives viewers an inside look at a case inspired by real crimes “from the headlines” – from the point of view of the police and prosecutors. It is the longest-running law enforcement series on television.

Dick Wolf is creator and executive producer. Rick Eid, Pamela Wechsler, Alex Hall, Arthur Forney and Peter Jankowski serve as executive producers. Law & Order is produced by Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, in association with Wolf Entertainment.

The new season begins Thursday, October 3 at 8pm on NBC and the following day on Peacock.

Tierney can currently be seen in theaters in Universal Pictures' Twisters. On the television front, she starred in the crime series American Rust, which was recently canceled for the second time, first by Showtime and now by Prime Video. She also had a regular role in the Showtime series The Affair and was seen in Showtime's Your Honor (US), CBS's The Good Wife and NBC's ER, among others, in which Tierney became known to the general public for her role as Dr. Abby Lockhart.
