Lawmen: Brass Reeves is no longer a spin-off from 1883

Paramount's Lawmen: Bass Reeves is no longer being referred to as a spin-off of 1883, the Yellowstone (2018) prequel series that brought the Dutton family west.
The first season of the Lawmen: Bass Reeves is now considered a standalone series set before the events of 1883.

With David Oyelowo (Silo), Lauren E. Banks (City on a Hill), Forrest Goodluck (The Republic of Sarah), Barry Pepper (The Kennedys), Demi Singleton (Godfather of Harlem), Donald Sutherland (The Undoing), Dennis Quaid (Full Circle (2023), Joaquina Kalukango (Lovecraft Country), Lonnie Chavis (This Is Us), Rob Morgan (Stranger Things), Ryan O'Nan (Big Sky), Grantham Coleman (11.22.63) and Justin Hurtt- Dunkley (Mare of Easttown), the first season of Lawmen follows Reeves' journey from slave to the first black US Marshal west of the Mississippi.

Chad Feehan spoke about the change in distinction. He said the following, via TV Line:

“Once I learned some of the things I didn’t know about Bass’ life, and decided where we wanted to start the story and where we wanted to end the story, it preceded 1883. The season takes place from, roughly, 1862 to 1877.”

Lawmen is an anthology series that follows a different legendary lawman each season. Lawmen: Bass Reeves premieres on Sunday, November 5.
