Life After Life - Season 1

The promise of the pearl that Life After Life could have been is not quite fulfilled.

However, the beginning is strong. Ursula Todd (various actresses) keeps getting a new chance. When she dies, her life starts again. Ursula dies regularly. This is partly due to the turbulent time in which she grows up. This is how Ursula dies at birth. In the rematch, however, she manages to survive this. Unfortunately, death is never far away. Her return to the world gives Ursula the opportunity to intervene in her own life, but also in the lives of others. Unfortunately, Ursula can never remember what happened in another life. She has premonitions and strange dreams but that's all she has to do better next time.

Although the story may not sound that innovative, the way it is presented is truly sublime.

Although the story may not sound that innovative, think for example of the 1993 film Groundhog Day, the way it is presented is truly sublime. First of all, the cast is excellently chosen. The acting is of a very high level. It provides, partly with the support of beautiful atmospheric images, for an engaging and special story. It's kind of a costume drama with a supernatural twist. By returning to the origin each time, you get a stronger bond with the different characters. On the one hand you see the characters develop further. On the other hand, there is a consistent knowledge that Ursula will die in a certain way again. The only question is how and when. Strangely enough, this issue creates the necessary tension.

The 2013 film adaptation of Kate Atkinson's book is truly a piece of art. It is wonderful to sympathize with Ursula. Whether she is a child, youthful or a little older. The choice of actresses is well done. The same goes for all the other chosen actors. This is really a top cast. For example, the choice of Isla Johnston (The Queen's Gambit) and Thomasin McKenzie (Totally Completely Fine) as Ursula really hit the mark. The rigid mother also gets a suitable face with Sian Clifford (His Dark Materials). Actually, every actor and actress can be mentioned, because as already mentioned, an excellent job has been done in that respect.

Yet there is unfortunately one thing that is less about Life After Life. The story lingers a bit in the Second World War. Logical in itself because of the great impact it had on the world. It is of course also to be expected that Ursula could die more than once. Moreover, this dark period also has a great impact on Ursula's family. It also provides some very nice stories. Unfortunately, some storylines fall short of the now sky-high expectations that you have as a viewer. The high quality of the other episodes of this season are to blame for that. In that sense it is actually a compliment to the rest of the season.

Life After Life has everything to be a pearl. Most episodes deliver what you would expect from a pearl. Unfortunately, some storylines let the series down somewhat. It is still good television, but the high quality of the other storylines is just not achieved. It makes the eight and a half now an eight. Still a very nice figure. Definitely recommended for anyone who likes captivating and beautiful stories. If you also like costume dramas, you can't ignore this series.
