Lost in Space - Season 3

The third season of Lost in Space is a nice conclusion to this Netflix science fiction series.

After a two-year wait, the third and final season of Lost in Space finally appeared on Netflix in December 2021. This season has eight episodes, as opposed to the first two seasons - which had ten each. The series picks up a year after the events of the previous season. All children of the space families have now settled on a reasonably habitable planet.

There, under the leadership of Judy Robinson (Taylor Russell, Falling Skies), they have organized their existence and they mine titanium so that Will Robinson (Maxwell Jenkins, Reacher) and his robot can repair their spaceship, Jupiter. The only adult on the planet is Dr. Smith (Parker Posey, Louie). She managed to maneuver herself among the children in a cunning way. On the planet, however, she seems to have settled into her role as a teacher for the very young.

Meanwhile, John (Toby Stephens, Black Sails) and Maureen Robinson (Molly Parker, House of Cards) and Don West (Ignacio Serricchio, Bones) are light years away and looking for materials to repair their starships. Together with the other adults, they collect material from the wreckage of the Resolute and from the nearest planet. There, they must guard against being caught by the army of robots searching for Will Robinson, taking out everyone they encounter in the process. The adults hope that they can go to the safe planet Alpha Centauri with their children, but are willing to sacrifice their own lives if necessary to prevent the robots from following them there.

The eight episodes vary quite a bit in length. That's great, because every story gets the attention it deserves. The first episode immediately jumps into action, without a quiet build-up like in the second season, when it started with an episode in a Christmas mood. That is a good development and ensures that you prefer to watch the episodes in one go.

It's just a pity that certain characters have been flattened. There is now little or no internal dynamic within the groups of astronauts. The incredibly false but intriguing manipulations of Dr. Smith have completely disappeared and Don West has lost all his opportunistic and selfish traits. As a result, this third season has mainly become a battle between humans and robots. On the other hand, there are a number of new characters, where the question is what role they have played in the past and what they will mean for the protagonists.

The sets look good again this season, they are convincing and very nice for a television series.

The sets look good again this season, they are convincing and very nice for a television series. The way the planet is shaped in the first episode and the dangers it harbors are largely convincing. There is sometimes a less convincing part, but in general it is well cared for. You can see the investment of Netflix in the series on the screen. All in all, I think this final season is a great conclusion to the remake of Irwin Allen's classic sci-fi series from the sixties.
