In Lupin, Omar Sy plays the role of professional thief Assane Diop, the only son of an immigrant from Senegal who has come to France to seek a better life for his child. Assane's father is framed for the theft of an expensive diamond necklace by his employer, the rich and powerful Hubert Pellegrini, and hangs himself in his prison cell out of shame, leaving the teenage Assane an orphan.
Twenty-five years later, inspired by a book about the gentleman thief Arsène Lupin that his father gave him on his birthday, Assane sets out to take revenge on the Pellegrini family. He uses his charisma and mastery of thievery, subterfuge and disguises to expose Hubert's crimes.
According to Netflix's logline for part three: "Now in hiding, Assane must learn to live far from his wife and son. Due to the suffering they endure at his hands, Assane can no longer stand it and decides to return to Paris to make them a crazy proposition: leave France and start a new life elsewhere. But the ghosts of the past are never far away, and an unexpected return will upend his plans."
The series also stars Ludivine Sagnier, Antoine Gouy, Soufiane Guerrab and Shirine Boutella.
Lupin was created by George Kay and François Uzan for Netflix and Gaumont Télévision. Ludovic Bernard, Podz and Xavier Gens direct.
The original French series is a contemporary adaptation of the novels by French writer Maurice LeBlanc, who created the character in 1905. The books have been adapted into dozens of television series and films over the years.
