“You have to have it from your friends”, they sometimes say. Well, then 'they' have never had a Milo in their circle of friends. Milo is one of those who, under the guise of a joke, touches your girlfriend all the time with his grabbing fingers. The kind of person who starts arguing with everyone in the pub after five beers and that you can jump in when some Hell's Angel attacks him, because he has been pissing on his moped outside. Milo is that guy who is always just shitting when it is time for Loetje to pay the bill. Okay, fair is fair, the latter is not entirely correct. Milo is fine in the weak laundry and likes to let it hang wide. For example, he has a ridiculously thick villa in Belize and he is not afraid to send his best friends plane tickets to come and turn things up a bit. “But that's just super nice about Milo, isn't it?” I hear you think. First of all ... Mind your own business. Second ... That's certainly nice about Milo, but if things are to good to be true, it is generally because they actually are. Whether Cobi, Lex, Gus and Joël would like to spend five days outside on the Caribbean Sea? Whether the old joints were still flexible enough to make the heads of the local beauties run wild in the discotheques of Belize City with inimitable dance moves? Would they feel embarrassed if some free plane tickets came their way? These were questions that the high school friends, now well into their forties, did not have to think about for long. Back waxing, arrange a babysitter for the cat and go. Rolls, smeared with almost life-threatening amounts of rum, the most beautiful anecdotes at first about the lips of the five blood brothers, soon the first cracks burst in that supposedly close friendship of yesteryear. The pressure on the five only increases when it turns out that Milo has not raked up his fortune in the most kosher way and that his classmates consciously share one of his antics. Fratsen doesn't really cover it, but I think we use the word 'fratsen' far too little nowadays. I want more frills! Frats for everyone! If you are talking about some friends who fly for five hours in a slightly too small plane to some party destination and there, out of sight of their loved ones, drink themselves into an acute coma, then the comparison with The Hangover soon set in. That's where the similarities end immediately, because Mad Dogs can in no way match the thigh squirt that drew half of the Netherlands to the cinema in 2009. IMDb says this is a comedy, but then they really stretch that concept to its limits. Is it exciting then? Halfway through episode six, I found out that I had updated my entire 2015 administration, so it's definitely not like you're getting sucked into the story, no. Sure Mad Dogs has that one guy from The Sopranos. Yes, that chick from Fargo plays in it and you might also recognize that immature DJ from Treme, but none of them reach the level we saw of them before. It's loose sand. Not 1 + 1 = 3, so to speak. You don't believe for a moment that you are watching a real group of friends and the characters are all so unsympathetic that you really don't really care what happens to them. Or maybe that is because of my heartlessness, of course that is also possible. The fact that the writers in the last episodes of craziness no longer know what kind of rabbit they have to conjure up from their top hats, we will just ignore. The above is a remake of the Mad Dogs that Sky 1 already served us in 2011. Basically the same recipe, only on Mallorca and with Brits. I didn't see this one myself (yet), but in general remakes are always a poor copy of the original, so if you still feel like a derailed men's outing, do that. That would be my advice, but who am I.

Welcome to Mad Dogs! Meet four friends. A beautiful island. A large villa. And a friend they visit with connections! All my urban people would now shout: fissssaaa! That means party, by the way. Get away from the daily grind, the routine and all other worries. It's time to wash down your disappointments with lots of alcohol. Unfortunately, it can never ever be fun. Fun? The visit of the four quickly turns into a horror film. At least I wouldn't go on vacation for a while ... if I survive the island. In Mad Dogs, the American remake of the British series of the same name, we see how Lex (Michael Imperioli, The Sopranos), Gus (Romany Malco, Weeds), Joel (Ben Chaplin, Mad Dogs) and Cobi (Steve Zahn, The Perfect Getaway) ) visit Milo (Billy Zane, Charmed) in Belize. That while the four visibly do not have the best relationship. Milo is clearly more successful than them and the tensions under the skin are increasing rapidly. Then something happens that completely turns the lives of these men upside down. Belize is rapidly turning into a hell from which they cannot escape. Can these ordinary men manage to return home unharmed? The Mad Dogs pilot was made available by Amazon a year ago during one of their pilot seasons. The channel will then make a number of pilots available for the public to give their feedback on. The streaming service indicates that this feedback partly determines whether the pilot is subsequently ordered as a series. There was good news for Mad Dogs and a year later we can finally watch the first season. So I did my best Ryan Lochte impersonation and went to the couch to see this pilot again. This is a good introduction to this series. Ben Chaplin also had a role in the British version, only then he took on the role of Milo. It's nice to see these childhood friends arrive in Belize. All with their reservations, but all intend to make the most of it. Over the years, the contact has weakened and mutual understanding has deteriorated. That is something that many people will identify with. We have our own family, children and we all go our own way. The contact and the extent to which you see each other just diminishes. That is part of life. Mad Dogs reveals the mutual irritations between these men. Steadily it comes to a major confrontation. The outcome will put you on the edge of your seat. I was floored for a while. Strong acting ensures that this pilot is better than average. The actors are attuned to each other and it shows. Especially after the fierce event that characterizes this pilot, you see the horror and fear on their faces. That is very convincingly highlighted and will also be the main reason for many to be ready for the rest of the season. The series is essentially about a number of men who have to put their differences aside to get off the island alive. It's about the willpower to survive a traumatic experience. Can you keep your wits about you in stressful situations? Who can deal with this and who succumbs to the pressure? Above all, it is about loyalty. In times of need you get to know your real friends. Then you may also get to know things that you would rather not have known. Who is there for each other ... Who tries to save his own skin ... The danger that looms is that the series will knock the strangest obstacles in their path. That the series tries to tell more than the story allows. It makes sense to put the gentlemen down in all kinds of situations for the sake of the plot. That is what often happens in the type of series like Mad Dogs. What you often see is that the situations become more and more absurd and that the whole quickly becomes more incredible / illogical. In other words, anything to prolong the suffering / tension. That's never the way to go. It only detracts from what the men experience. What we experience as viewers. Those are concerns for later. Worries I will most likely see come true, by the way. But the pilot does what it should do. The episode makes you curious about more. That of course remains one of the most important functions of a pilot. The first season was released by Amazon on January 22 (2016). Those looking for a thriller should seriously consider getting a seat on the couch for these gentlemen's antics. www.meneervevie.com
