Marshals - First episode

Kayce Dutton joins the US Marshals in this Yellowstone spin-off.
Marshals is already the third spin-off of the acclaimed Western epic Yellowstone (2018). While the two other spin-offs were a look back at the past of Yellowstone (2018), Marshals takes us a few years after the end of the original. This also means we'll quickly recognize some faces from the original Yellowstone. Naturally, the lead role in this spin-off goes to a member of the Dutton family. In this case, it's Kayce, who, after the death of his father and wife, keeps the ranch alive. However, the man is on the brink of depression, and the relationship with his son isn't in the best shape either.

When he's contacted one day by a former Navy Seals colleague, Kayce is tempted to assist him and his team as a local Marshal during a minister's visit to the reservation. Not everyone is happy with the plans for the development of a mine, and problems are expected. Rightly so, because a bomb explodes during the meeting, seriously injuring an important community figure. Kayce and his colleagues set out to find the people behind this attack.

The question we must ask ourselves now is whether this scenario is worth being presented in a Yellowstone setting. Ultimately, 90 percent of this first episode could have just been a scenario for an episode of FBI, SWAT, or any other American police series. Of course, the nature we saw in Yellowstone (2018) is also present here, but the emphasis is more on the police work and Kayce's issues. However, through the collaboration with the Marshals, Kayce seems to have seen the light. He wants to get his life back on track and makes an important decision for his future and that of his son. This decision could be significant for the Yellowstone feel of the episodes to come in the following weeks.

About the writer, Karzal

Karzal
Mike (1995) has been a member of MySeries since 2016 and is mainly active on the English version of the site. Since 2018, he has been actively translating news articles, columns, reviews and basically everything that ends up on the Dutch site. The original articles, columns and reviews were actually written by others. During the week Mike can be found at IKEA, where he is a national systems specialist and occasionally also in the classroom to teach an English lesson. In addition, Mike logically enjoys watching series and has actually been spoon-fed this from an early age. The genre doesn't matter, there is a place for everything in the otherwise busy life.

It's only the first episode, but I found Marshals quite disappointing. It lacks the atmosphere and depth that made Yellowstone so strong and feels more like a standard crime series than a true spin-off. Hopefully, it will improve in the following episodes.

Kayce has a strange role in Yellowstone. He wasn't that interesting to me either.
One minute he's living on the reservation, the next he's back on the ranch and he's the boss, suddenly he's a livestock commissioner, then he's living somewhere else again and he's no longer a livestock commissioner. He felt like he didn't fit in anywhere.

The only thing he was good at was the work he's about to do: tracking down bad guys and dealing with them.
I'm curious to see what happens next, but I'll wait until a few more seasons have aired.

A mediocre series for me so far!
Lots of clichés, and macho gun clatter.
An unlikely plot twist
It lacks the Yellowstone atmosphere.
